The best matt varnish I have used was the old GW matt varnish spray. Sadly it was discontinued a long time ago due to 'health concerns' I was told. So now, what do modellers consider the best matt varnish available, one that provides a truly matt finish. It can be paint on or spray. Most of the ones I see now seem to leave a satin finish rather than a truly matt finish.

So, what is the recommendation?

Testors Dullcote.

Testor's Dullcote is the One True Matt Varnish.

Any problems with Dullcote yellowing? Used to have that problem with Humbrol matt varnish. That's why I switched to their Matt Cote but it does give you the slightly satin finish that Artilleryman mentions. A little talcum powder added to the varnish before stirring helps.

Krylon Flat Matte is ok.

Winsor & Newton Galeria Acyrlic Matt Varnish. Water based, use straight from the bottle, available in all good hobby stores and art shops. £4.65 GBP for 75 ml so not pricey either.

I've never seen anyone sell Testors Dullcote over the counter so to speak so I've never tried it. Most of the recommendations above come from across the pond.

Ditto on the Krylon Flat Matte

Testors Dullcote, spray only. Testors brush-on Dullcote is really flat, but it yellows. Sucks.

I thought Krylon Flat and Krylon Matte were two different items. I have never seen one with both terms.

But they do change their labeling from time to time.

I quite like the Army painter spray..whatever they call it. OTOH I usually cover all my <1900 CE figures in high gloss anyway.

Best Matt spray ever is Windsor and Newton professional Matt spray.

Dullcote. In all the decades that I've used it, I've never had a single problem with it.

Barenakedleadies26 Jul 2015 2:01 p.m. PST

Dullcote spray is very good. Never had a problem with a can either.

For brush on I like the Polly S jar.

Thank you gentlemen. Wow! I have never known such an overwhelming vote for a single product. Now all I need to do is find a source in the UK.

Brian Bronson26 Jul 2015 3:21 p.m. PST

Dullcote spray. I've never had any problems with it yellowing or being anything less than perfectly flat.

Dullcote.

If you need an acrylic flat: Vallejo Flat Varnish.

Fillmore and have tried quite a few others with mixed results.

Testors Dullcoat – A modified version is sold in the EU (I guess the chemical's used in the USA formula aren't legal in the EU)

Krylon has a product that is a clear acrylic flat.. not a matte as the matte still has a shine to it. I stopped using the matte finish and switched to the flat. It works great. Here is a link to what it is. I find that the Dullcote and Testors are quite a bit higher priced for the amount you get and don't work any better.

I really like Winsor & Newton Galeria Acyrlic Matt Varnish and is all I use now.

Ditto 1 more vote (esp. in the UK) for W&N Galeria matt (needs a good shake before use to mix the matting agent though!). I get mine in Hobbycraft if I need it quickly or online through Jackson's art supplies if I remember in time to order

I have used Testor's Dullcote for the last 3 years and never had a problem except just do not spray and let dry in a humid area. It will cloud up but, all you have to do is spray it again and it becomes clear.

That reminds me I have 2 cans on hold at the store need to go pick it up.

julianmizzi20 Feb 2016 3:40 a.m. PST

i use Micador Picture varnish – Mat .

Dullcote in the US and Winsor & Newton Matt Varnish overseas (currently the UAE). Dullcote is hard to come by here.
