When applying highlights to miniatures, is it better to add white to the base color or is it better to find a lighter color of the base altogether?

Someone wiser than me should answer :)

Generally lighter colour. Look at, for instance, Reaper triads. Sometimes moving up on the colour wheel is what you do – for instance orange to highlight red instead of the pink you would get from adding white

If you have more pastel or faded colours, then maybe you got there by adding white or grey, so in that case, adding white would work.

It also depends on scale, level of detail you want and so on – for 10mm don't stress the details for instance

Good luck

John
