"An international group of astronomers has used the ESO 3.6-metre telescope to identify a planet just like Jupiter orbiting at the same distance from a Sun-like star, HIP 11915. According to current theories, the formation of Jupiter-mass planets plays an important role in shaping the architecture of planetary systems. The existence of a Jupiter-mass planet in a Jupiter-like orbit around a Sun-like star opens the possibility that the system of planets around this star may be similar to our own Solar System. HIP 11915 is about the same age as the Sun and, furthermore, its Sun-like composition suggests that there may also be rocky planets orbiting closer to the star. So far, exoplanet surveys have been most sensitive to planetary systems that are populated in their inner regions by massive planets, down to a few times the mass of Earth. This contrasts with our Solar System, where there are small rocky planets in the inner regions and gas giants like Jupiter farther out…" Full article here link

Wait, would this be the solar system with the Earth where the kids live for centuries and every adult dies of a horrible disease, or the one with the Yangs and the Kohms, or the one with the 20th century Roman Empire complete with gladiatorial executions, or… you know, maybe a second Earth isn't quite what we need,,, |

Joking aside, this really is an intriguing find. Will this system have rocky planets of Earth-equivalent mass in the Goldilocks Zone? One wonders how specific the requirements for an actual Earth 2.0 are. Is our Earth the way it is due to all the myriad factors that make up our solar system? Not just Earth itself and its location, or even Jupiter and its location, but everything else. Comets may have rained water, even necessary organic chemicals on Earth; this we surmise. But beyond that, are the planets of Mercury, Venus, Mars, etc. also of significance to Earth's development? How precise is the formula, if you will, that makes a living Earth? In any case, I look forward to more news from this system. Maybe it has a big blue marble to match our own. Maybe that would give us something to think about, too. |
