Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some 28mm elf cavalry. I'd prefer something a little subdued, not ultra spangly/spikey GW or the katana wielding fellers from their LoTR range. Something with an early 80s Citadel elf or Ral Partha vibe perhaps? 'Realistic' (which is a silly term to use with fantasy but I'm sure you know what I mean, with a few spangly bits, they are elves after all…. |

I have some of the old Elf cav from Tom Meier/Thunderbolt Mountain, and they are wonderful figs. When I bought them, the packaging was a little different, but I think they are still all available through the pages at the link. They also have infantry and other associated figs. Very finely detailed, and just beautiful sculpts. link |

I'll second the Mirliton/ex-Grenadier Wood Elves. Beautiful sculpts, full of personality. |

I've always liked the Tom Meier elves – old school but beautifully sculpted and detailed |

Tom Meier… Mirliton… Tom Meier… Mirliton… Tom Meier… Mirliton… Lord, I am glad I am going the way of 15mm! That would be a very hard call to make. |

Thanks all, they both look great, I think the Tom Meier ones tick the boxes for me as they are less 'wild looking' than the Mirlitons. Just a question on the Tom Meiers, they are listed as 30mm, do they fit in OK with older fantasy (eg think GW LoTR or old Citadel)? |

I think that they do, but they are less cartoonish, with more serious, less exaggerated features. I just measured one a standing elf with spear at 31.5mm, an old GW standing orc at 26.5mm, and a giant/troll slayer dwarf at 21.5mm to top of head. It is all subjective, but I like the contrast of their finer, more serious looks. It suits them as an ancient and wise race. Sorry, I don't have any old GW humans to compare them to. |

As irishserb says, the sculpting styles are very different. Even if the size difference of Tom's Elves doesn't bother you, that might. They are absolutely beautiful sculpts, though. (Well, duh, they're by Tom Meier.) The Mirliton Elves were sculpted by Mark Copplestone and fit in very well with GW's older "heroic" minis. |

Thunderbolt Mountain has Wood Elves and High Elves and both look the part, fitting my perceived view of what these would look like if real beings and not fantasy. Based upon the criteria you set forth, Timbo W, I recommend Tom Meier's figures. Buy the multi-packs and the price per figure is reduced. |

I have a couple units of the Tom Meier ones. They're taller & thinner than, say the GW models. They're beautiful models & I keep them in their own unit. They won't mix well with other Elves, but who's to say there aren't taller, thinner Elves from the far side of the forest? I use them as my elite Wood Elf spear unit (don't remember what GW called them in 6th edition). |

Mantic has some decent restic elf cavalry. The only thing is that you may need to straighten the horses with hot water before assembling. |

Ral Partha Europe have their elves which have an early GW vibe going on link
