Just a very quick note to announce that Galleys & Galleons, the tabletop wargame for wee ships in the Age of Discovery, is now available as a pdf through Ganesha Games. By next month, it should also be available through Wargamesvault and as a hard copy through Lulu and Amazon. My sincere thanks to all who encouraged the game through its development!

Coolio. I've been meaning to ask: how well will these handle galleys without the galleons? I'm mostly interested in ancients for naval combat.

Good news. I'm glad our input helped :)

Picked it up, and some Wizkids ships, I have a nephew who'll love this.

Handles Gleys just fine! Great game, lots of fun.

Hi Doug,

As OnlyWarlock says, it handles ancient galley warfare really nicely actually. We were playing a Punic Wars game only last weekend :)

Excellent! I'll undoubtedly pick this one up (I need to pick up a copy of Mighty Monsters, too, now that I think about it), but as a preview … are the various galleys of the ancient era (pentekonters, liburnians, hemiolas, biremes, triremes, and so forth) including amongst the pre-statted ship types?

Thanks,
Doug

I thought you said September! Well, I shan't complain.

I'll put in for a copy after dinner. Looks like it's time to drag the balsa and basswood back out.

just got a copy… looks really fun, it seems it could work with some old man o' war minis

Doug, there are only four pre-statted profiles for ancient era ships in the book as examples (bireme, trireme, quadreme, 'Roman' quinquereme). I am working on a free pdf which should be available from Ganesha in the next week or so which will have about 12-16 different ancient vessels from the Classical-Hellenistic periods.

What age bracket in history do these rules cover?

Prince Alberts Revenge27 Jul 2015 11:00 a.m. PST

Ordered mine from Lulu yesterday, looking forward to them. Steviep81, I believe they are for the same period as the author's land battle set Irregular Wars, so during age of discovery. I'd say later 15th century to mid 17th century. Of course, it looks like the author also included ancient ships as well.

Steviep8128 Jul 2015 8:24 a.m. PST

Thanks Prince. Would they stretch to napoleonic being as they can be used for ancients?

boy wundyr x28 Jul 2015 12:12 p.m. PST

100 gun Man-o-Wars are the biggest "modern" ship profiled in the rules, but there is a ship creation system so you can work from the pre-profiled ones or from scratch to come up with your own. You could probably take the "war" galleon and remove the high castles trait for a smaller ship of the line for instance.

I think as long as you weren't trying to do Trafalgar and had more focus on the smaller actions with smaller ships you'll be ok for Napoleonics.

I'm saying this as someone who's read the rules twice and am awaiting the arrival of my Wizkids ships.

Steviep81, the focus period is an ambiguously framed 'Age of Discovery' which is nominally 16th-18th centuries. Basic profiles appear for early frigates and men of war and, as stated above, the fleet builder software on the Ganesha site allows for complete customisation.

Just noticed it has been added to Wargames Vault. Bought my copy.

Harry – any update on the stats for the classical ships?

Thanks,
Doug
