I saw a fairly recent one, made in Korea, that was pretty good. Forget the title now though. |

There have been a lot of votes for Pork Chop Hill already, so I'll say The Hunters. Ever since I saw this movie with Robert Mitchum, I have loved the F-86 Saber. |

I think Weasel might be referring to The Brotherhood of War. An excellent film with dramatic combat scenes which makes Pork Chop Hill look rather ordinary. |
Fatman | 20 Jul 2015 11:35 a.m. PST |
"Fixed Bayonets!" directed by Sam Fuller although "The Steel Helmet" also by Fuller is a close second. In the air its a tie between "Bridges at Toko Ri" and "The Hunters". "A Hill in Korea" deserves a mention as that rarity a British film about Korea. Finally of the Korean films I would go for "Brotherhood" or "71 Into the Fire" both excellent with Brotherhood having the edge. Fatman |

Weasel, are you thinking of "Taegukgi, the Brotherhood of War" by chance? I really enjoyed this one and it looks like the full movie is on youtube right now. YouTube link |

'Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War' is one of those gritty and realistic post-SPR movies, at least in its brutal depiction of combat. If you liked it another home-grown Korean movie to check out is 'The Front Line.' |

Pork Chop Hill for atmosphere……….A Hill in Korea sticks with me too, one of the first movies I was allowed to stay up late and watch with my dad! ( I was 8-9 as I recall- long time ago!) |

The Bridges at Toko-Ri is probably my favorite, but I'll also stump for The Glory Brigade. |

Yeah, looks like it was Brotherhood of War. |

Taegukgi is a dramatic, cinematic movie, but not so much for wargame scenario material. "We're getting drafted at bayonet point – war sucks." "We're getting the crap blown out of us by off-board artillery – war sucks." "We've been ambushed, we're all ed up and cut off and and pinned down – war sucks." "Wait a minute – your big brother just went Bruce Lee on a whole battalion of Norks and personally captured their commander with his bare hands – what the hey?" "Wait a minute – your big brother changed sides and is now leading around 100 Norks with red flags whose super-power is to stand on skylines and look menacing – what the hey?" Cinematic, but not good for the table-top. |

"The Front Line", a made in Korea movie about the last days of the war where a unit is ordered time and again to assault a particular hill. Acting, production values, story line are all excellent. There is a major plot twist toward the end that is heart breaking. |

Talk about a walk down memory lane of great films. Hard to top the Hunters or Bridge at Toko Ri for jet films! I understand that Fix Bayonets and Steel Helmet were actually helped along quite a bit by the US Army. They wanted to show teamwork and how men react differently under extremes. While Tae Guk Gi is good, Pork Chop Hill is still outstanding. Heroism, loyalty, fear, poor communications all as it was. I don't know what I liked better, Robert Blake looking for his rifle and radio or Scatman Carruthers being forced to adance at gunpoint. The mass fights are amazing. Was it The Glory Brigade where a platoon of troops pauses and watches a dual between a chinese and an american 60mm mortar team? |

I think Pork Chop Hill wins out for me, but Sam Fuller's pair were good, the death of the big sergeant in Fixed Bayonets remains in my memory. |

What Fatman didn't mention about "A Hill in Korea" is that it includes Michael Caine and Stanley Baker a decade before Zulu. It stresses the National Servicemen who fought in Korea as part of the "peacetime" draft, a first in British history, young men who were "old enough to fight, but not old enough to vote." Cheers, Peter |
