I have both books and I agree with the previous statements…ie it is certainly not worth $56.00 USD USD. It is available at OMM for $52.00 USD USD.
To be fair there is a lot of color in the books so the printing price would be costly. The title is a misnomer. It is mostly about the uniforms and organization of the various troops on both sides.
Also, its worth is dependent upon what exactly your needs are.
It is one of the few books that is geared to the war gamer of things War of 1812…lots of uniform plates, photos of renactors, reproduction of Lossing's maps/doiagrams, some OOB, description of the troop types on both sides etc.
The suggested war game layouts (the other companion booklet "Scenarios for the War of 1812") are simplistic and sometimes inaccurate. But, if you are OK with a basic generic map of the battle, then these volumes will do fine.
The best part is the wide variety of action uniform plates by renown military artist Bob Marrion. This is what I primarily use this book for.
Nonetheless, if you are new to the War of 1812 and its associated war gaming then is book is a good start…if obtained at a at a reasonable price.
