Hi guys

Have just finished making/paint 64 plastic Warlord German Grenadiers on commission, a big job, around 65hrs work.

As far as the kit goes, I like them better then the metal Bolt action figs, they are better proportioned and the faces are less cartoony, due to them being plastic the detail isn't as crisp as the metals, but they are still pretty good, my only issues with them is they really could do with more arm options, they need a straight left and right carrying arm so you can pose them carrying weapons at the trail, and they need a pointing arm, it's pretty cliché but good for command poses, also they don't have any shoulder boards/straps, it would be interesting to see how the parts interchange with the other Warlord German plastic infantry kits, I have a project forming in the back of my mind, but that's for the distant future.

no shoulder straps? quite a deal breaker in my book

Gunner Dunbar19 Jul 2015 10:05 p.m. PST

yeah, I think they figured the webbing could cover the shoulder strap, so we wont bother adding it, but really it should still be visible, if I ever build a set for myself I will add them with green stuff.

Nice paintwork!

well yes webbing goes under straps and German straps are a bit distinctive, rather sloppy of them.

trailape20 Jul 2015 6:46 a.m. PST

Actually webbing goes OVER straps.
In 33 years of soldering I've never seen a soldier unbutton a shoulder strap, place on his webbing and then button up the strap over the webbing.
Most soldiers can't get that crap off fast enough.
I've never seen a photo of a German soldier in the field with webbing fed UNDER a shoulder board / strap.it would be completely impractical.
Did the Germans ditch eppauletes on their later uniforms?

@ Trailape; Might depend on who captured them!

@ Spontoon
What might depend on who captured them?
I don't follow I'm afraid

I think far more ditched the straps and just used the belt

Skarper22 Jul 2015 10:01 a.m. PST

Just done a quick google images search and it's true – USUALLY the straps are over the shoulder tabs. One or two images show them worn under.

I'd have assumed they were under until trailape's comment.

They should still be on the figures though. Very visible in 28mm.

Gunner Dunbar22 Jul 2015 3:56 p.m. PST

I'm surprised out how few photos have the Y strap attached, many troops seem to have ditched it and only used the waist belt.

trailape22 Jul 2015 10:47 p.m. PST

I notice that too Danl.
Just goes to show how troops adapt their kit in the field.
Even though troops should keep their kit standardised in the field (for good reasons) how often do you them 'personalizing' the hell out of it.

Nice painting. I'm stunned that they left off the shoulder straps – definitely a show stopper for me.

For those out for a good deal – the Grenadiers are currently kind of on sale at WG – actually you get the rulebook with a free plastic set, and "Bolt Action" is actually a pound cheaper then the Grenadiers.

Nice paint job and review.

Thing is when worn over the shoulder boards, they are still very visible…

Good pic Piers, yes very disappointing in that area, but nothing a little GS can't fix.
