When did TOW humvees (M1025 correct?) go into service? I'm looking at about a 1986 time period for a game and wanted to know if a US Army Mech or Light infantry unit would of had TOW mounted humvees. The earliest I personally remember seeing them was on CNN when the 82nd Airborne deployed to Saudi Arabia in August 1991 for Desert Shield. I know that the scout platoons in Tank and Mech battalions eventually swapped out Bradley's for TOW humvees but I'm not sure of the exact timing for the change. Where would TOW humvees be, if any, in 1986? |

Going threw my memory banks: I was in 25th ID we went from a Inf Div to a (LT) Inf in 85. I was in the Div Recon 3/4 Cav. We got our got our Gun Humvees (M60 MG) in the fall of 85. and received our TOW Humvee's before March of 86 when we went to Korea for Team Spirit. At one point we were running Gun Humvees with TOW Jeeps. I remember that the Inf Bn's were drawing there TOW Humvee's a few days after we did. I remember 9th ID (Motorized) was approximately 1 year ahead of us on issue of new equipment. Hope this helps. |

"HMMWVs first saw combat in Operation Just Cause, the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989." So, 1986 is a bit too early. You can use an M113 with the TOW. |

When I went to ROTC Advance Camp at Fort Bragg in the summer of 1988 the 82nd had the HMMWV TOWS |

The introduction of the TOW humvee gave a big boost to the nigh fighting capability of light units. The sight had thermal imagery so even if the unit wasn't looking for tanks they could still identify troops and buildings. M113 with a TOW? Was this the M981 or something else? Thread title tag was very helpful wish more would use it. |

Back issues of Armor Magazine have some good discussions of this: link For instance, the July-August 1989 issue has an article called "HMMWV and Scouts: Do They Mix?" See: PDF link |

The predessor to the M981 Improved TOW Vehicle was the M150 which was basically a M113 with an exposed TOW launcher in front of the back hatch. I seem to recall it could be dismounted and fired from a tripod as well. |
