With all due respect to Donald Featherstone and Military Modelling magazine, The Unfortunate Prince is a 54mm representation of the demise of Prince Imperial Louis Napoleon in 1879. Please excuse my poor photographs.
The choice of figures was from the excellent Cliff Sanderson range of Zulu war figures produced by Hinchliffe Models Ltd. The actual figures used were CS8 British Officer, CS15, CS6, CS17, and two assegais and a throwing spear from CS14 Battlefield Pack No.2. All these figures were assembled as supplied with the exception of CS8 and CS16 (helmet removed, head turned slightly, arm and leg slightly turned, holster repositioned; removed Martini Henry rifle and replaced with spare assegai). This diorama inspired me to attempt a similar project but it became clear that my talent was more with the ground/topography than with painting the figures!! The full article can be found in Military Modelling magazine #May 1976 (cost 35p!!). Again, with much respect to both parties. |

I think it's in my pile of things to read one day when I get around to it -must be getting into the top half by now. |

Oh gosh, I remember that one. Military Modelling mag was my essential wargaming read back then. And apart from the Airfix sets sold in local toy stores, it was the only place I could find and order figs. |

Yes indeed. As said, essential wargaming reading back then. During the mid-1970s to early-1980s my passion was the English Civil War (as known back then) and MM produced some fine articles, pictures, units, flags, and advertised figures that kept me well satisfied. It always wrangled with me that Airfix did not produce HO size ECW units so my path was essentially 25mm Hinchcliffe, Essex, Wargames Foundry, and Perry Miniatures. Other figures often were purchased to supplement the above ranges. It has all been rather lovely. Thanks guys. |

There is a chapter on the death of the Prince Imperial in "The Zulu War: Then and Now" that I recall as being very good. |

I think I still have that issue! |
