If I recall, there was a Partizan Press booklet covering this unit (perhaps by J Barrat?).

Does anyone know where I might get a copy?

Cheers.

Never heard of that one- of course the "Northern Horse " wasn't a unit but a collection of broken regiments and fragments that had been aprt of Newcastles army from 1642 until the defeat of Marston Moor.
Reid lists many of the units in his copious footnotes in All the Kings armies. Young provides a unit list in Marston Moor. By Naseby many of these units were barely a troop strong and further fragmentation would take place . I think Barrett wrote a biogrphical sketch of Langdale and the Northern Hoprse for Military Illustrated magazine. There was certainly a piece on the relief of Pntefract Castle by Langdale.

I use the term 'unit' loosely. The 'Northern Horse' didn't come into being until after the Royalist defeat at Marston Moor, when the remnants of Newcastle's cavalry were brigaded together under Langdale and subsequently served with the Oxford Army.

I have Reid and Young. I was wondering whether Barrat/Barrett's piece shed any other light on the formation. The book/booklet was on Caliver Books list in the 1990s, if I recall.

Its not one I have- though iiI do have numbers of other Partizan press booklets that one has so far evaded me.
I do have barretts articles in Militaryb illustraded- which mag is now defunct I think as I have not seen one for years is there anything in Foardes Naseby ?

Foard mentions the Northern Horse in passing. Newman, however, in 'The Battle of Marston Moor' has a fair bit to say about them in the time after the battle until their destruction at Burgh-by-Sands in Oct 1645. There is even more detail in his Ph.D thesis 'The Royalist Army in Northern England 1642 to 1645', which is now available on line.

Perhaps this is enough?

I've not seen Newmans phd stuff – sSounds useful thoug his opinions on Newcastles foot are a little odd There was a spat between Reid and him in the pages of ECWN&Q as I recall. He was more than a little scathing and patronising in equal measure about "amateur" historians ….

Please could you let us know where one can find Newman's thesis online?

I have checked the White Rose etheses online database and Newman does not come up. I always understood it to have been submitted at York and being superviser by Aylmer?

I do not recall a specific Partizan Press title on the Northern Horse – a quick search of Caliver Books online catalogue did not reveal anything. There may be something in 'For God and the North' an older Partizan title but to be honest it muddles up Fairfaxes regiments from the New Model with those operating in under Lord Fairfax and generally I though was a bit of a let down.

Is it possible that peter Young published something way back in the JSAHR? The bibliography in Young & Holmes might tell you.

Thomas,

I downloaded Newman's thesis from EThOS (Electronic Theses Online Service). The full title is:

The Royalist Army in Northern England 1642-45

by Peter Robert Newman

I think you'll need to enter all of the above to find it.

There's mention in Dave Johnson's book 'Adwalton Moor' of a similar thesis dealing with the Northern Parliamentary Army:

The War in the North. The Northern Parliamentary Army in the English Civil War 1642 – 1645

By: J Jones

(Ontario PhD, 1991)

But I haven't been able to find it online.

Andy:

I recall that spat. At one point Newman churlishly says (to paraphrase): ' Knowing the number of buttons on a musketeer's coat does not further the cause of historial investigation'!

Billyfish,

Thanks for the info about Newman's thesis I will chase it up. I had heard of Jones' thesis on the Northern Parliamentarian's but have not located a version. Not even University Microfilms list.
