My son and I played (both adults) as it turned out 2 quick games of AOS. We read through the rules and Warscrolls and then decided for a laugh to pit Nagash against Orion as my son is an Undead player and I Wood Elves. Nagash went first and it was all over by turn 2 with Nagash raising many to bloody many units with his 8 spells.
Then we tried a more standard battle. We both took a 1000pts list from a 7th edition game and field it under the new rules(we never advanced to 8th). It was Undead verses Dwarves and again the raising ability of the Undead is just awesome and they won in 5 turns. The Dwarves were never in it – under the 7th Edition I regularly beat the Undead.
My comments are that the rules need a lot more flesh, sorry I am an old school player and like things spelt out.
I will give it a couple more goes but not looking good, I will stay with 7th Ed or find a new set for the local group.

Thanks for the update!

This is a classic example of "there's no such thing as bad publicity." Warhammer Fantasy is not my thing at all but I'm intrigued by all of the drama. Thanks for the write up.

Try your dwarves vs undead battle again with the Mantic 2nd Edition Kings of War rules. Basic rules and starter army lists are free from their site, here;

We're switching over and you might find the KoW rules to your liking as well. The 2nd Ed hardback is due out by the end of next month and looks like it will get lots of ongoing support. Including new units for existing armies and 2 completely new armies by early next year.

Idaho I would switch over to Kings of War if my forces all my forces were supported, as in there is not an equivalent Chaos or Lizardman force. I have Dogs of War and Bretonnins which could be used in Kings of War but as Max pointed out I can just continue to play 7th or preferably 6th edition Warhammer and I have all I need. Still I have downloaded the free KoW rules and I am giving them a read.

I agree there has been too much drama over AoS. What I do not agree with is how GW has pretty much screwed the mom and pop retailers. I happened to stop by my FLGS yesterday and sitting off to one side are all the eighth edition box sets and army books for Warhammer Fantasy. The owner told me there was never an offer to buy back the now defunct books and the announcement about AoS was made with little chance for retailers to determine how much demand there was for the new game.

Now my friend who owns the store has a small fortune in Warhammer 8th he cannot sell, and six box sets of AoS he did not want. He ordered one and they sent six and of course billed him for the five additional boxes. Added to that GW opened a game store near him and he has seen his sales of Warhammer and 40K plummet. I fear he will simply find that stocking miniatures in general is a bad idea as he now makes most his income off of board games and CCG.

Agreed on the Chaos and Lizardman forces. I'd like to see a "ratman" equivalent also. At least on the "ratman" I have some hope as they already produce the very nice looking Veer-Myn (space rats) for their Sci-fi Warpath game. I figure the best way to see more armies in the future is to support them now.

I also have a friend who owns a FLGS, but I haven't had a chance to stop by and see him in several weeks. Very interested in hearing his take on AoS and what it might mean to his sales, but like you I fear GW did not have his best interests at heart with the way they rolled out AoS.

I simply made up a Kings of War Lizardmen army list from the various units in the other lists. Find something similar to the Lizardman unit and use its stats… seemed to work OK. There is enough variety throughout the various lists to do this.

It is in Beta but there are Beastmen, Ratmen and Tomb Kings in the Mantic Beta lsists here.

Lizardmen are up next.

These will be published (when all the betas are out) by the end of this year.

Swastakowey, that is some awesome info. Looking forward to seeing these finalized. Thanks!

Feels good to be and oldgamer stuck in 6th edition…

I use the army books from 7th tough, lots of special characthers in there and the 7th rules had only slight changes respect 6th.
