Which manufacturer makes the best fantasy Dwarves for wargaming?

45thdiv17 Jul 2015 6:42 p.m. PST

Hasslefree makes the best in scale dwarves. You can see their knees. I like the dark age looking ones with quilted armor. They also paint up very well. Really clean castings.

I like a lot of Reaper's dwarves from their Warlord range.

I always liked the Old Glory Ghost line of dwarves.

It depends on individual taste and the game itself.

If I were wargaming in skirmishers form, I'd pay the extra for quality and go Hasslefree or Reaper or both, maybe even Scibor.

If it was mass battles, second-hand GW/Citadel, Dwarf Wars, KoW, etc.

I think the Hobbit Dwarfs are some of the best out there for classic Dwarfs but I really liked the Rackham ones too. I generally don't find dwarfs appealing but those I liked.

Beowulf Fezian17 Jul 2015 7:44 p.m. PST

Red Box's dwarfs are excellent.

There have been several companies over the years that made/make good looking dwarves, but I think that Reaper and Scibor are really nicely done. Years ago I would have said the GW Chaos line (the really old ones I liked for some reason, maybe because they were some of my first chaotic looking dwarves), Ral Partha, and Maurauder were my favorites even though different in scale.

However, having said that, I feel there really is no comparison between old school sculpting/casting and what we have today. It really is a Golden Age in figure making. :)

Ral Partha makes/made the very best, but they're small for today.
Most of the Reaper ones are very nice.
The GW style is awful, and a lot of companies tend to emulate that.

Bob Olley.

I like the Perry made GW LoTR line, and Crhis Tubbs Mithril. These tend to a more realistic approach.

Luckily, today you will probably find something to cater any taste.

I really like Sergeant Major Miniatures Bloody day (formerly vendel I believe) 28mm dwarves.

Check out MOM Miniatures their dwarfs look really nice. Prices are very reasonable but I can't tell you size comparisons yet as I don't have any yet

Like Jakse375, I rate my dwarf figures by sculptor.

Unlike Jakse375, Bob Olley, while talented, very talented, is usually not at the top of my list.

Tom Meier is.

Depends how many you want? Dungeon crawling/skirmishing then Hasslefrees are lovely and Reapers are very nice to. Both are expensive if you want big units though.

For big battles I like Mantic's Dwarves nice selection in plastic good price. You can also make nice looking units out of EM4s ex grenadier plastics with a bit of work and they are dirt cheap (like 50 for £7.50 GBP GBP)

Special mention to Black hats dwarves that I think are pretty spiffy to and are a pretty good price for metal.

I love my Dwarf Wars dwarves but they cannot be mixed with anyone else's figures. They are seriously big but you've got to love a berzerker wearing nothing but a (fortunately) long beard.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine18 Jul 2015 11:11 a.m. PST

I guess the other question is what style you want for your dwarves?

The mini Vikings are probably the most common. Hasslefree's dwarves are more feudal looking while CP models do middle eastern style dwarves

If like you Renaissance dwarfs there is a good link to manufactures here

+ 1 Prince Rupert of the Rhine ,he has covered all the bases and I suspect a stunty connoisseur to boot.

I do ave a soft spot for some of the classic GW citadel dwarves as there are some real gems hidden amongst them.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine18 Jul 2015 12:39 p.m. PST

feet up now@ totally agree Citadel has made some great dwarves over the years. Some of my first ever dwarves were these guys

Denizen multipart Dwarves will never be beat.

dick garrison18 Jul 2015 3:22 p.m. PST

Bob Olley's are excellent, though a little on the big side.

Bob is the king of all things Dwarf!!

GypsyComet19 Jul 2015 1:36 p.m. PST

There are two different artistic takes on Dwarfs.

GW started one of them, the heavy-set "meatball with legs" Dwarf. Rackham, Dwarf Wars, GW-WFB, Bob Olley, Black Tree, Avatars of War, and a few others fall into this camp for the most part.

The thinner style is seen mostly from Kevin White (Hasslefree and the Celtos line), older Ral Partha, Red Box, and GW-LotR. I have a set of Asgard (I think) Dwarf warriors as well that fall into this camp.

Reaper has released both types over the years, but has little or no scale control.

Old Glory Ghost Minis.

Cragglow19 Jul 2015 11:06 p.m. PST

Best dorfs the lead adventure Ratnik dwarves. I got mine at magister militum. But they are more akin to bob olley sculpts so very incompatible with redbox and gw lotr or vendel even. But they queue up well with bob olley, gw (up to the last set (not plastic)) also good with Foundry if you can find em. Foundry is good in its own right. But yeah Ratnik is my end all favorite.

Shadowdragon20 Jul 2015 5:32 p.m. PST

I really hate the bowling balls with feet Warhammer style dwarves. My favourites are Reaper, Hasslefree, and (surprisingly) the LotR dwarves.

snurl120 Jul 2015 11:31 p.m. PST

Foundry made some good ones but they aren't available anymore.

Khadrin21 Jul 2015 4:11 a.m. PST

I also like Oathsworn Miniatures dwarves

darclegion23 Jul 2015 5:02 a.m. PST

I second the Sgt Major Dwarfs, formerly Vendel. They are great sculpts for a great price.

I love the sculpts on the Sgt. Major (Vendel) miniatures, but how do they compare to other figure lines? I seem to recall they were large-ish 28mm, but I haven't seen them for a while.

zonk7629 Mar 2016 8:26 a.m. PST

Yes, I'd like to know the answer to the above post as well? Do they size up with LOTR Dwarves?
