"The 8.8cm PaK43 auf Waffenträger (88mm PaK43 Weapons Carrier) was part of a German program to design light self-propelled mounts for a variety of artillery and anti-tank guns. A design by Ardeltwerke in Eberwalde was settled on in 1944 to carry the 8.8 cm PaK43 gun…"

If there's a chap loading, and with the gunner presumably getting ready to fire, perhaps the driver's slipped off to spend a penny… John T |

Would you want to be sitting in the driver's seat when that big gun goes off? |

Chamberlain & Doyle (Encyclopaedia of German Tanks WW2) give a brief description. It was another weapon to be brought in in the latter part of 1945 (whoops) and they credit it with a 4-man crew. I have no idea where they were supposed to sit looking at the model. The design was to carry field artillery pieces, which were allegedly to be dismountable if required, without special equipment. The Ardelt design based on the Hetzer allowed the driver's compartment to be folded to allow greater depression of the gun. Perhaps that's why he's done one in the pictures. Armament could be either the 10.5-cm leFH or the Pak43 pictured. There's no mention in the book but surely it would need a support vehicle for crew and ammn? The howitzer model is listed as carrying 96 rounds, the anti-tank as just 34 rounds. Seems the typical late war German folly, but they started work on it in 1943! |
