I might start, got a 2nd ed box set knocking around. More to the point will you be allowed to play it in a GW store? |
Stealth1000 | 17 Jul 2015 10:03 a.m. PST |
I gave up WFB some 20+ years ago. Might get out my old 3rd edition and see if it will work for 15mm. |
Kenneth Portner | 17 Jul 2015 10:27 a.m. PST |
No one will every play it again. It's forbidden. |
John Jacobs | 17 Jul 2015 10:28 a.m. PST |
I have considered picking up some miniatures to try it. The buy-in on previous editions made it too steep for me. |
mex10mm | 17 Jul 2015 10:57 a.m. PST |
Actually, I have played more games of "Age of Sigmar" using my old WHFB miniatures than I ever played using the WHFB rules. |

Prompted by a morbid curiousity over the AoS trainwreck , along with some inspiring Oldhammer blogs, my interest in the WH world has been rekindled. I am dragging out, cataloging, and organizing my WFB horde. I have started painting on some loose ends, but I REALLY need to get a better focus on it. It's all very overwhelming. Where did I GET all of this? I have no idea what edition I will go with- 1st through 3rd, or the above with a smaller scale, Mordheim-like take. It will probably take me to next year to get anything off the ground. Too much stuff is in line ahead of it. So in answer to the OP: well, the opposite, really! |

Going to keep playing previous editions for as long as I can find players. Maybe I'll relegate WHFB to solo play now… Damon. |
Axebreaker | 17 Jul 2015 2:33 p.m. PST |
I don't think I've played in at least year and stopped buying figures from them years ago, but if anything I'm contemplating playing oldhammer using the older figures or just collecting and painting some for fun. Hard to say as I have so many historical projects on the go I'm not sure I'll find the time for that. If the club still plays 8th I'll play a game here there maybe, but as for AoS I have zero interest in both the game and the figures. Christopher |

A few afficionados will keep on playing older editions, but given the mindset with which the average Warhammer gamer has been conditioned, WHFB will stop being played as a mainstream game very soon. The reason is very simple: there will be no new players coming in, only grognards will keep on playing it for a few years, but those number will decrease over time. And yes, I am fully aware old games never die. However, there is a difference between a mainstream game that is commercially available, and a game only played by a handful of connaisseurs. After all, the Reissewitz rules are still being played in some circles, as are the HGWells rules. |
langobard | 18 Jul 2015 5:17 a.m. PST |
Lucky for me I'd already jumped to Warmaster. I have been playing an unsupported game for years. Those who chose to do so in a larger scale will no doubt be just as successful… |
Barenakedleadies | 18 Jul 2015 7:31 a.m. PST |
Nah, I'm going to keep things right where they are. While the new minis look very nice they simply are not my cup of tea. They do nothing for me… way to 40K for my taste. And I prefer large battles and there are plenty of skirmish rules I can already use my current armies for. Mordheim worked for me. |
Feet up now | 18 Jul 2015 11:57 a.m. PST |
Enjoyed playing it around 95 to 98. That was it for me really. Played a few base sets since but not really interested me enough to get back. So no from Ere |

Well I certainly am. I have got all enthused about getting my Nippon and Dogs of War armies back in to the fray. I found these excellent 8th Edition army books at link They are pretty well thought out and include an updated Bretonnian book that brings back all the Heroes lost in 6th Ed. |

Stopping playing Warhammer because AOS is out just makes no sense to me. To me that's like saying you won't read The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings books any more because the movies are all out on DVD. The books will ALWAYS be there, Peter Jackson doesn't have the power to change your own experience with Tolkien's world. And in the same sense, GW doesn't have the power to take away YOUR Warhammer world. I mean think about it. 3rd edition seems to be the favorite for a lot of people on these boards. 3rd was the first edition I became involved in when I first found out about Warhammer. 3rd came out in 1987! That's almost 30 years ago! And it's still being played. That's kind of amazing. To be quite honest, I love The Old World and its lore enough that I would rather play solo games of 8th edition or older editions than give up the game altogether. I realize it's frustrating when a new version of Warhammer comes out and your store or club won't support or play the previous edition, it truly does leave you stuck. I don't have an answer for that, but as I said the answer most CERTAINLY isn't to burn your miniature collection and toss your books into a dumpster! My gosh at the very least make an attempt to shift from a gamer to a collector. Get some display cases. Paint and finish off any armies that aren't quite complete. Pick one single, signature terrain piece that you've always thought of building, and finally build it! Don't steal your own joy just because AOS isn't your favorite edition of Warhammer. |

Prompted by a morbid curiousity over the AoS trainwreck Do you have ANY sales figures to back that up? |
Baranovich | 21 Jul 2015 8:13 a.m. PST |
@Cyrus the Great, Exactly! I would also like to know where the information is coming from that makes AOS a "trainwreck" or "failure", other than wishful thinking from people who might want it to be so. Sounds like the "they're doomed" internet crowd is out and roaming the lands. |
Baranovich | 21 Jul 2015 8:18 a.m. PST |
…I would also like to know how people are so certain a mere two weeks in from release that AOS is a trainwreck. I just find that level of ESP amazing. |
Cyrus the Great | 21 Jul 2015 8:48 a.m. PST |
@Baranovich, A lot of wishful thinking by people who don't even have a dog in the fight. I like facts to back up dubious statements! |

I still have my 1st edition boxset somewhere not played since the 90s but still play warmaster and epic 40k regularly. |
xLAVAx | 25 Jul 2015 7:26 p.m. PST |
Guess not since I never bought any in the first place. While I love the WH 40K minis, the fantasy stuff looked too silly for me to ever get into. |

Switching to Kings of War. I like being able to use all my old Dogs of War pike blocks. I find it to be a combination Warhammer and hail Caesar, i like it allot. |

I have to say…..I never liked WHFB. I played 3rd through 6th and can't say I liked much about any of them. For me….. I thought the army creating process was tedious and unimaginative. I only played because my friends and customers played. I truth I rarely lost but did not enjoy playing either. AoS looks like it might actually be fun. I might try it and see |

Funny but I just now saw that the Unofficial Warhammer Armies Project have produced revised versions of the Skaven and Beastmen army books – since I have probably 6000pts+ of Beastmen I might just have to take a look at it and consider playing 8th again. Got several guys at my local club interested. |
Essexkiwi | 21 Dec 2015 4:04 a.m. PST |
Reasons why I won't play Warhammer any more: 1. Warhammer 8th. Loss of company support, the inevitable disappearance of the 'old' miniature range as it's replaced by the new 32mm scale, new aesthetic and absurdly overpriced AOS range, and no new recruitment of players. It's 'garagehammer' to be played with existing WFB mates, and will slowly die out. 2. AOS. Because it's a godawful fail. I'd rather give up wargaming. 3. Warhammer 9th Age. Started out great, turned into a death-by-committee overblown rewrite of the entire game so it's no longer even Warhammer. I'm sure it appeals to the ETC crowd, not for me. And I'm sure in Sweden or wherever you can get a game, not so in NZ. 4. Furionhammer. This is what I'd hoped 9th Age would be, a tweak of 8th edition not a new game based on WFB. Nice job, but sadly nobody in NZ is interested in taking it up, and like 8th, and 9th Age, it has the same issues of no company support and no new players, and will slowly die out. Looking back now that I'm well and truly over the grieving process of WFB being killed off, there was more about the game that I hated than I loved. I loved the Warhammer world and the fluff, hated GW's ineptitude in rules writing and balance. King of War for me now, my only throwback to Warhammer is playing Mordheim. |
YogiBearMinis | 24 Dec 2015 1:58 p.m. PST |
GW is relaunching Specialist Games, with a new edition of Mordheim in the pipeline. It MIGHT support play by earlier figures through Classic warbands. |
Shadowcat20 | 31 Dec 2015 5:00 p.m. PST |
Dropped out at 3rd ed. Never had an interest to play after that but kept a few armies. Seems some of my painting customers are showing interest in buying them for KoW. Heck, may get me to dust off an old army and try it myself. Seems the winner here will be the company who comes out with rules to support all the old Warhammer armies out there. If they ONLY go for rules and let the glut of figs avalible out there supply the armies it might work. If GW starts to fire back up their old bits line to supply demand then you will know they failed with the attempt to force every one to buy in again. Of course this is from the guy who still has his Squat 40K army. |
