Hello I was wondering if anyone has a scenario for First Newbury that they would be prepared to share. I am most interested in a decent map suitable for setting up a game (ideally, with the scale map), but OOBs would also be welcome. While I am at it, does anyone have any advice on the best sources for ECW scenarios. I have the Partisan scenario books. Thank you |

Best map and OB for newbury I have found in in Stuart Reid- All the kings armies. Not specifically a gaming scenario though . There is also an Osprey csampaign on the battle- but I don't have that yet so can't comment on its usefulness. |

Thank you for the information. I have the Stuart Reid book. I'll have to dig it out. Regard |

I would have thought the Partizan scenario books would have had all the information you need? |

The Partizan books tend to cover mostly smaller actions. |

First Newbury very interesting one. Malcom Wanklyn reckoned that a map of the battle was practically impossible to do as the forces were moving around too much and too little detail survived on deployment. Ymmv! The battlefield is certainly possible to define though. For wargames scenarios the Forlorn Hope guide, see here link is very good. lots of regimental detail and sensible conjecture where records don't survive. For example the royalist foot ob is reasonably easy to reconstruct based on sieges of Bristol and Gloucester, but few of the regiments of horse are explicitly identifiable as being there. However, this seems to be the majority of the Oxford horse so there are certainly good candidates. Following the above link to caliver books I see there are books by chris Scott and john barrat. Anyone read these? They might go on my shopping list! The osprey is pretty good too. |

Thank you. I'm reading the Barratt book now, but I'm only up to the Siege of Gloucester. I have generally found his books to be workmanlike, if a bit uninspiring. My game is in a couple of weeks, so probably not enough time to get the Forlorn Hope guide and digest it. I wil have to hunt around to see what else I have on First Newbury. I had to look up "ymmv". Regards |

Wanklyn of course has a point. It's a hell of a battle to digest. I like Barrat's work he knows hs stuff |

The Partizan books tend to cover mostly smaller actions. I have ECW Scenarios Book 2 and now that you mention it, it does seem to cover smaller and several less well know battles. |

The best view of the battle and campaign is provided by John Day's book: 'Gloucester and Newbury' link He has done a very good job on taking the sources for Newbury I, the landscape history and integrating them. There are a series of maps showing how he thinks the action evolved but it is not written with wargaming in mind so no two page summary. For my money it is better than John Barratt's book (and I have both). It also includes accounts of the scrapes and skirmishes that occurred though the campaign as well as the 'siege' of Gloucester. |
