Can someone enlighten me. I heard that the new names for races in Age of Sigmar were decided on for copyright purposes. Sounds like a good idea for a company like GW. But seriously. Aelf? That is old English for Elf. It is used in book title and stories that have been around for donkey's years. I think that the GW lawyers will be busy sending out C&D letters again. Aelf the Space Marine anyone? |

A (very) quick Google search turns up AELF as l'Association épiscopal liturgique francophones: aelf.org. From your lips to God's ear. Ron |

It was going to be Alf, but even GW couldn't come up with enough cats to pay the licensing fee. |

Gobemouche, you forgot to add, "Hah! I kill me!" |

Just think of them as High Elves. Though with GW they are more than likely going to be… Dark Elves |

Seems a large chunk of AOS was written and designed by lawyers. |

I like "ilf" better. Or "eff". And then they could use their race's name as a noun, verb, and adjective, like smurfs. |

I sorta like plain ol' "Elf" myself, if you're really feeling the IP burn though, something a little more creative for the subraces, ala Tolkien's "Noldor" would have been shiny. But hey, if we'd had my way, there'd still be Greatswords, State Troops, and such on Sigmar's team doing a duet with the Stormies, instead of this "Free People" second fiddle stuff, and the High Elves would go on as normal. When I pay for my "Aelfs", I'll call them what I darn well please. AoS has some nifty stuff, the spelling though, is a "Fael". Hmm, how can we play with "Aelf"? "Aelfin" or "Aelfish"? Either one sounds like something that a sea-dwarf had to raise after a bit too much o' the "ael". What else can be done? "Aelfkin"? |

Great, now I have to tell my friends their aelfs are geay. |

…so is there a pronounciation guide to this word? If the "a" is silent…. what's the point… really. |

Ghames Whorkshoppe anyone? |

It's the End Times, right? So time for the old, public domain names to end. |

All things considered, I thought the race formerly known as Elves got off easy. I pity some of the other new names brainstormed by 5-year olds. Time to play "match that name": Orruks Ogors Troggoth Dorfs Sylvaneth Seraphon |

Gobemouche, you forgot to add, "Hah! I kill me!" If I say that, then people get their hopes up. Then there's all the whining "But, you promised!" |

I think that they may have good grounds to copyright those names – as bad as they are. But Aelf is an Old English word already in existence that means 'Elf'. |

Fortunately no one will mistake GW's "Orruks" for Tolkien's Uruk, as GW's concept is utterly fresh and different, and not derivative at all. |

@JSchutt: Jokes about the TV show aside, it should perhaps be pronounced "Alf". The "a" isn't exactly silent, rather the "ae" combination is standing in for the æ ligature. In Old English, where we get names such as Ælfræd (advised by elves?), this is usually pronounced somewhere between "a" and "e"… Wiki suggests similar to the short "a" in "cat", which would be consistent with that OE name becoming "Alfred" in modern English. |

The Beast Rampant | 16 Jul 2015 6:14 p.m. PST |
Or like the other eff word. Man, eff that! Smurves can't have all the fun. "Dorfs"? I just don't think they're gonna be able to make an army of Tim Conways grimdark enough. |
3AcresAndATau | 16 Jul 2015 6:38 p.m. PST |
Dorfs actually got off even worse for the wear, they're now "Steamhead Duardin". Yeah… |
