In the RPG world, "Pay what you want" products are fairly common. A little less common in the wargame field but there's some out there. I've done a few, mostly for smaller bits where I didn't feel charging was cool, but I wanted to give people the option of throwing a tip my way. From my limited experience, about 1 in 5 people will pay something and of those, about half will pay the "suggested" amount while the rest will pay less (and a few will pay a bit more). Of course, that depends a lot on the product, the seller, the utility etc. What is your stance on "Pay what you want" content, be it rules, supplements, scenarios etc. ?
Does it make you more inclined to check something out? Does it make the product seem cheaper or less professional to you? Do you ever go back and pay for an item you downloaded for free? (as in, have you actually done this) What would you be more inclined to invest in? A core game that was regular price with "pay what you want" expansions or a core game that was "pay what you want" with regular expansions? Do you feel the "Pay what you want" model is better suited to certain products? Anything else on your mind? Let's talk about this. |

I've "bought" a few RPG items at PWYW. I paid $0.00 USD, because I wanted to check them out. On a couple, I decided I did want them and actually purchased the hard copy. On others, I decide they weren't of any interest or value to me, so I didn't pay anything. And probably delete the file at some point. If I have opened it in a year or more, how likely am I to in the future. |

When I released the initial Snappy Nappy Napoleonic rules back in 1994, I released it using the 'shareware' concept -- photocopy the rules (5.5x8" booklet sized, no illustrations) all you want, distribute it all you want, and if you found it of use, send money. I received about $100 USD, sometimes $1 USD, sometimes $5 USD, which was just about enough to cover the initial cost of photocopying and mailing. Fast forward 15 years later, with refinements and MWAN AAR articles and SN was released as 8.5x11" booklet sized, with a professional graphics guy for layout, illustrations, diagrams, and tear-out quick reference charts in the middle. At least a couple folks I met at shows said they had sent a couple bucks way back and now bought a copy of the bigger booklet. |

PWYW has only been on my radar since my finances crashed and burned. Once I am back on my feet, I plan to pay for ALL of the PWYW stuff I have downloaded over the past year. |

I'll be honest, I am not likely to pay much if anything. Course most of that will just end up being a read through and shelved. I play infinity, I had the free rules for a while and then I bought the published version. |

I have bought several rules/scenarios this way. I would always suggest a minimum price of £1.00 GBP/$1 as nearly everyone will pay this amount. Some will pay more but at least you are getting some return on your time. I would suggest the free stuff be 1 or 2 page additions or something that is going to suck them in more. I find I am more likely to buy things under £5.00 GBP/$5 as a risk if I am not sure anything over that I really have to want it or know more about it to justify the purchase price. |

When I see the PWYW, I tend to think it is amateurish, and I have yet to 'purchase' anything with that asking price. It suggests the author does not believe their work to be worth anything -- including my time. Don't mean to be harsh, just being honest. YMMV. Cheers! |
