Well I live in Whitehaven and what you have read is the local "recieved wisedom" regarding the affair. Like most seaports- and in 1776 WH was one of the largest in the country- the docks were surrounded by ale houses. So getting diverted from your task in hand is quite a likely situation. Actually its just the same now on a Saturday night.
