Last night I found an interesting and new to me Second Afghan War primary resource online, a compilation of issues of "OUR CHRONICLE" -- the regimental magazine of the 67th (South Hampshire) Regt. of Foot -- from 1877 to 1880, which covers the Afghan war years 1878-1880. The articles cover a wide range of topics, including songs, jokes, battle reports, transport & logistics, casualties, political negotiations and somewhat detailed descriptions of the ground travelled and fought over by the Reg, which is of particular interest to my 1879 Battle of Charasiab terrain obsession. One Wing of the 67th was present at Charasiab but held in reserve. If you're interested it may be worth your time to check it out at the other end of this link: link |

Very interesting find. It seems like a large portion of the Afghan resistance was usually small groups sniping at the British forces and then running off. |

Yes, much more of that than stand-up fights. Still, over the course of the war there were 7 or 8 good size set-piece battles, but the 67th Regt. was only present at two of them, Charasiab in the Fall of 1879 (when they were held in reserve so didn't really get a chance to fight) and Kabul that following Winter. If it was the magazine of the 92nd Highlanders I think there would be more "Battle Reports", though still lots more of the low-grade guerilla action you refer to. |
