Dear TMP folks,

With the release of KoW2, I've decided to create a 6mm fantasy army (there are some great 6mm figures out there now!) but would like some advice on how best to base them. I like the look of the Games Workshop "texture" paints (e.g., Stirland Mud), but they're kind of a pain to use (a bit thick).

Does anyone have any experience, or know any tutorials, on how best to base 6mm figures so the base doesn't overwhelm the tiny figures? I doubt I'd use much in the way of scenic stuff, just a modest amount of uneven gravel/rocks/sand

I've tried PVC glue and sand, but it looked a bit too coarse and "perfect" – all the sand grain sizes were the same… I guess I went to the wrong beach!

I'd love to hear your advice.

If you look for a blog by Cranium27. He has a great 6mm blog

If you look at April 2013 and go to April 1st he shows how to make your own basetex. Very easy and looking at the rest of the blog it's very effective

I use sand and flock with my 6mm stuff. Compared to 2mm, they really aren't that small.

Builders sand is quite uneven, looks much better than beach sand (depending on the beach).

PVA & sand works for me – the trick is more in how you apply it and paint it. Don't make the PVA too thick and leave the sand on for 30 sec before tapping off, you should find that you get a more varied texture that way.

Paint all in a thinned dark brown & drybrush a lighter colour over it. I then add 2/3mm static grass in clumpy bits but the fine foam bits can work well too, just a bit more fiddly to work with.

Thanks Jim Duncan

If you want to base single figures or small groups like a section or 2-person support weapon, tiddlywinks come in different sizes, as do coins! Superglue them on, paint, flock, sorted.

I find lighter colored bases showcase figures better.
