The Reaper Bones 3 Kickstarter just hit it's first $1 USD Million, with almost 9000 backers, and in only a few days!

That looks really good. Really, really good.

I don't want to appear negative for the sake of it – but has anyone bought into the earlier Kickstarters and been in anyway disappointed by what they got ? I'm guessing, by the level this has been backed to, not many people..but I'd like to know if there are any downsides at all.

Thanks.

Focus on the monsters, they translate best to bones. Thin structures such as spears and swords will never be straight in the bones material.

Tempting but participating=death by spouse. grin

There were a few poorly cast figures in Bones 1, but they seemed to fix that for the most part by Bones 2. For the price, I couldn't be happier with all I got in those two Kickstarter.
As Ran the Cid said, the big stuff is the best deal. I've been able to use the hot/ cold water method to straighten all my weapons satisfactorily.

For a look at how they paint up, you can browse my Bones painting blog:

I will have SO many Bones to paint!

9000 backers, 14,500 comments

I have been very happy with Bones, especially for large monsters. I bought many of the Bones 1 figures at retail and I bought a lot from Bones 2. I have looked at Bones 3 and, so far there is very little that I actually want.

I think I will wait and by the items that I want from retailers.

I wasn't super sold on the base offering (though successive stretch goals may make me eat those words), but really like some of the add-ons.

I'm kicking myelf for not acting sooner (I'm Wave #2 for add-ons), since I watched the KS open, and it was a damned dollar!

I backed I and II, and am now in for III.

Bent parts can be easily straightened by submerging in very hot water, reshape, dunk in ice water. I've fixed a number of them that way, and the straightened parts have stayed straight even a year later.

Agree that larger stuff is the nicest, but I've been happy with nearly all the Bones figs, except for a handful of very slight female figures from Bones I. Those did have some detail issues, but everything else is great. Something about the plastic makes the detail look softer than it is, once you paint them they look great.

wolfgangbrooks11 Jul 2015 12:59 p.m. PST

I disagree that the bent stuff is easily fixed. No matter what I've tried with mine they always revert to bent, at the latest a few hours later. Doesn't matter how thick or thin the part. I'd suggest only buying stuff if you can see it in package first unless you're ready for some real work to make them acceptable.

The material also despite all claims doesn't seem to hold paint especially well. And alot of the stuff converted from metal cast to Bones loses alot of definition and detail.

I've pretty much given up on it.

Pledged a dollar to be able to just buy a few of the add ons. Like Joker if I were to go for the larger $100 USD backing I would be in deep kaka with the wife. I still have a pile of Bones #1 still waiting paint.

Syrinx011 Jul 2015 1:23 p.m. PST

I haven't even started on my Bones II hoard. Might break down and order the giants but I am giving the core set a pass.

Those mouseling's and paint set 2 are calling my name…

I'm in for just the Mouselings.

And really hoping the chibi Bonesylvanians finally make it in.

Well i bought into the Bones 1 kickstarter. They were nice until i started to paint them. The details are soft and due to the material they are made from, and how they need to be cast, there are many lost details around where boots and cloaks meet. I find I don't enjoy painting them at all. Just finished painting my last one. The rest are being sold off.

MadDrMark11 Jul 2015 5:22 p.m. PST

I'm liking the ogres, and at $2 USD each, it's hard to say no.

I bought some test Bones minis before backing the KS. The billing/ice water method worked like a charm to straighten them. I painted them unprimed, and while paint did not adhere as well as it would to a high quality primer, it worked as least as well as with a cheap spray paint base. I think washing them did a lot to prepare the surface.

Thanks for all these comments – it's helping me to make up my mind (to be honest it's the "death by spouse" aspect that has me most worried at the moment grin).

I really like the large monsters/dragons – so maybe the $1 USD+extras way would be best.

Got a few days to decide in!

Guthroth12 Jul 2015 10:53 a.m. PST

I think the stone circle looks good, so I,m in for a dollar as well.

MadDrMark12 Jul 2015 11:23 a.m. PST

Outgrowth, a lot of people seem to be following your strategy. A $1 USD entry also qualifies you for the expansions, which might prove more appealing than the core. I expect the first expansion will be revealed in a day or two.

Guthroth12 Jul 2015 12:06 p.m. PST

Outgrowth ? LOL – gotta love spell checkers !!!!!!!

I am on a tight budget and don't play fantasy games, so something absolutely unbelievable will have to pop up to get me to invest any more than the $11 USD I am in for now.

MadDrMark12 Jul 2015 12:15 p.m. PST

Sorry, Guthroth. That's my fourth autocorrect error today. I'd disable it if it didn't prevent me from making four times the number of typos naturally.

Guthroth12 Jul 2015 12:40 p.m. PST

No worries

They're great for tabletop. As others have suggested, Reaper's fine with their best-selling Bones being the larger figures. Large figures in metal are too expensive ($30 hill giant in metal) for most GM's. Reaper still sells smaller figures in metal, and Reaper's good with that, too.

I am under whelmed by the big figs so far but the main hoard has some of the best character figs they ever did. I painted nearly every one in metal for my ebay business and this batch has some nice stuff.
I like the undead extras and the giants but not much else in the addons.

One thing thats really cool this time is that you can really manipulate what you get.

As far as the material, detail has gotten better from the 1st run. There are ways of bending them back, its on the reaper forums. It is a tricky materil but there are guidelines that make it as easy as anything else.

I am way behind on mine but I painted some for commission and after priming with black paint they paint up very nice. Because I was unsure of the detail I poured everything I had into them and they came out awesome.

I ended up falling in love with more of the stuff than I thought. The big dragon is cool and the undead subset is really nice. Liked the Lovecraft set.

The way they ran all those giants when you thought it was over was awesome. I couldnt believe how many huge pledges they got in the last 5 minutes and only a few backed out.
It was fun and lots of cool stuff.

I must wonder though after three of these what the hell do you need to buy now?
