Note, though, that the carroccio of Siena at Montaperti carried the banner of the terzo of Camollia which was pure white rather than the black and white 'balzana'. This is described in at least one of the histories and Ventura shows it too. It was supposed to represent the city pledging itself to the Virgin Mary. |
