Hi all, I haven't watched this series since I was young, and am interested in picking it up. I have two questions for anyone kind enough to help: 1. Does the series cover McClellan's removal in favour of Pope, the latter's fiasco at 2nd Bull Run, McClellan's reinstatement and the battle of Antietam? Because the episodes currently available on YouTube do not seem to do so – they skip straight from McClellan's getting bogged down on the Peninsula to Burnside's catastrophe at Fredericksburg, with only an oblique mention of Antietam. Presumably these are badly edited cut-downs? 2. Which series available on Amazon.co.uk should I get – the 2009 or 2012 version? I stress, I'm a Brit, living in the UK, who'd need a Region 2 version. Many thanks in advance for any help. Cheers, Redcoat |

I'm pretty sure Antietam is covered in a fair amount of detail. Plus I do remember the "Headquarters where his hindquarters should be" line on Pope. |

Sounds like you saw a brutally edited version of the series. Antietam gets good coverage in the full-length series. I am not familiar with the 2009 or 2012 versions in the UK, but my inclination is to see what the running times are and get the longer one. |

I bought the 2012 commemorative edition. It has the full 690 minutes run time, full screen edition, and includes a bonus 6th dvd with extra interviews with Ken Burns and others. It is a region 2 dvd. I have heard rumours they plan to release a blu-ray edition in September if you want to wait. |

Gents, that's mighty useful. Will indeed hold fire till Blu-Ray appears (or doesn't) in Sept. Many thanks, y'all! Redcoat |

Bear in mind, one of the common mistakes of the command structure in the east, is that McClellan was not removed from command of the Army of the Potomac until after Antietam. Pope was given a new army, Army of Virginia, to command. Pope did not supersede McClellan, and hence McClellan did not need to be reinstated. |

It's available on netflix, at least in the US. |

Many of McClellan's troops were sent (slowly) to operate under Pope's Army of Virginia, so many that the Army of the Potomac shrank to a stub. It was clear to Union rank and file that Pope was a bone head. After Pope was thrashed, the Army of Virginia was dissolved and all troops came under McClellan. The troops knew Little Mac wouldn't make the same sort of errors Pope did and they cheered wildly, even those who had never been in the AoP. Little Mac would make other errors, mostly involving cautious moves at a snail's pace. But nothing as egregious as Pope. |

While McClellan was too cautious to ever thrash Lee (See Sharpsburg here), he was at least cautious enough to avoid a thrashing. |

just watched it last week on a painting binge. Not much detail around any battle or many Why's answered. Its a great narration in the background, peppered with cool anecdotes through out, but not great on detail around any of the battles or campaigns. |

The series is worth watching just to listen to Shelby Foote. He always reminded me of some kindly old uncle telling tales by the fireside. |

The 2012 version has been remastered. |
