Dear All,

In case you haven't gotten to it yet, please have a stab at this years wargaming survey. The more who enter, the more relevant the data and conclusions. There are also prizes to be won:

Hi!

Hopefully you remember the Great Wargaming Survey we ran last year. As far as we're concerned, with nearly 8,000 responses it was a great success. It was a good snapshot of wargamers in the summer of 2014. But to be able to even start to discern trends, we have to do it again (and again and again, but that's for future years). Hence the Great > Wargaming Survey 2015. Obviously, the answers to our questions will only be valid if lots and lots of wargamers take the time – which shouldn't be more than 5-10 minutes by the way – to fill out the survey. As a thank you, we're offering everyone a 10% discount on their next purchase from our webstore and, if you choose to submit your email address, you'll have a chance at winning some really awesome prizes as well. The full list is included in the survey and is even longer than last year. Please ask your friends to fill out the survey as well, and if you have a blog, please post about it. Your friends and your readers too deserve a shot at these wonderful prizes and of course, we all want to know more about ourselves.

Just filled it out. I'll be interested to see the results.
Question #16 was a little difficult to configure.

Thanks

David Manley08 Jul 2015 4:43 a.m. PST

Completed. It is very land-centric in its questions. A few of the quewtions could be better phrased and could do with "none of the above" or other options. But other than that a well constructed survey

Mute Bystander08 Jul 2015 5:13 a.m. PST

As an "aerial first" guy I saw what David Manley said also. I started clicking on WW1, WW2, etc., until I saw "aerial" then went back and turned them off. Aerial and Naval are hardly monolithic. When I have a desire to play naval war games I never think of anything before guns were routinely mounted on decks for example.

War games and war game surveys always have the dichotomy of going "temporal" or "thematic" in structure. Even Beyond "Historical, Fantasy, Science Fiction, VSF, Pulp, etc., …" you run into a lot of different ways to approach asking questions in a survey.

Good survey – I doubt there would be a perfect one for me unless I designed it myself. grin

I get the feeling that the survey will evolve over time, this year's was different than last year's, so hopefully they get into more detail on air, naval, SF&F gaming eventually.

Interesting, I also want to see the results.

Q17 requires me to pick an answer even when I have entered something into the 'other' box – no point in continuing when there is an obvious fault.

Fixed!

I can only echo Mr. Manley. I particularly disliked the lumping of naval and air in as skirmish gaming.

I found the previous survey produced some interesting results.

This is a very worthwhile exercise and I am glad that someone is taking on the task.

Thanks guys! I think we all benefit. Some useful feedback for the survey team already, but I do agree that it is even better than last years.

Done the survey. really interesting. A professional researcher would probably point out one or two issues with questions. Also, you say "Obviously, the answers to our questions will only be valid if lots and lots of wargamers take the time – <SNIP> – to fill out the survey." but numbers don't necessarily lead to validity; it's the representativeness of your sample. (e.g. if the only responses come from online gamers, your results will be skewed against those who hate computers, who rely entirely on magazines and books and so on). Even so, definitely worth doing – just be wary of reading too much into the results.

The last two questions made me think a bit. Maybe add a final question: "Anything else?"
