Did Serjeants have a carbine or only the Privates?

In most pictures I've seen both modern and old seem to show that they did. Sgt Ewart is usually depicted with his.

Thanks Edwulf, I will go ahead and glue them on then!

to muddle the issue though the reenactors of the 16th Light Dragoons don't seem to have them…. I am going through my books looking for something more concrete than artists.

Ewart was a heavy dragoon (RNBD) and the suggestion is that, even then, he did not carry a carbine. Corporals probably did (which is important if you are trying to model the Royals grabbing an eagle) probably. If he carried one had it would have been a much longer thing than the well known Light Cavalry Paget rifle.Personally, for a serg(j)eant, I would not.

Dragoon sergeants didn't carry muskets (as the Dragoons were then equipped with) in the SYW.

I've found some more pictures of corporals with carbines and sgt majors with out. So far I've not found anything that says they did it didn't. But after reading through my books it's clear i have a lot less info on cavalry units than I do on infantry.
