If you could change one thing about TMP, what would you change?

Mattw338506 Jul 2015 7:58 p.m. PST

For me it would be updating the forums to a more modern look.

Jemima Fawr06 Jul 2015 8:11 p.m. PST

I like the old look – unlike the modern forums it actually works on this connection, isn't blocked by the net-nanny for being 'games' and isn't slowed to a crawl by bandwidth-hogging video ads.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut06 Jul 2015 8:16 p.m. PST

Get rid of the Dawghouse… there are other methods of policing members.

Personal logo Condotta Supporting Member of TMP06 Jul 2015 8:17 p.m. PST

Enable easier photo postings so we don't have to provide a URL/link to some on-line repository, but can load direct.

Swastakowey06 Jul 2015 8:38 p.m. PST

I want to be able to click on a member and see their post history.

R Brown06 Jul 2015 8:44 p.m. PST

Agree with making it easier to post photos.

skippy000106 Jul 2015 8:45 p.m. PST

Cross post to all boards.

Ditto, Condotta-easier to put in pictures/maps in discussions.

Faster/easier search system.

better archiving previous posts and site page.

someone to type for me as i get older and feebler.

rmcaras Supporting Member of TMP06 Jul 2015 8:56 p.m. PST

Fix the messaging system…

boy wundyr x06 Jul 2015 9:03 p.m. PST

Some way to identify threads I've posted in. Once they drop off the front page my memory isn't up to remember what discussions I want to keep an eye on.

Big Red Supporting Member of TMP06 Jul 2015 9:14 p.m. PST

Easier to post photos.

Bandolier06 Jul 2015 9:21 p.m. PST

+1 on clicking to see member post history.

Personal logo Tacitus Supporting Member of TMP06 Jul 2015 9:41 p.m. PST

Agree with boy wundyr

platypus01au06 Jul 2015 9:42 p.m. PST

OK, one thing then.

- to see my post history

I would like

- to see my post history
- to have a better way to navagate through the forums
- a search facility

sneakgun06 Jul 2015 9:42 p.m. PST

Able to delete old posts…

platypus01au06 Jul 2015 9:43 p.m. PST

Also, getting rid of this…

/mivacommon/boards/topics.mv: Line 575: MvLOCKFILE: Runtime Error: Error creating lockfile 'boards/topics.dbf.lck': Timed out waiting for lock

More space for the thread tittles.

Use third party forum software instead of custom code.

Tons of modern features without loads of effort, and you can always configure out options you don't like instead of trying to write everything by hand.

nevinsrip06 Jul 2015 11:38 p.m. PST

I would like a better search feature. The one you have now sucks.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP06 Jul 2015 11:47 p.m. PST

Better search capabilities

britishlinescarlet206 Jul 2015 11:57 p.m. PST

1. Make it simple to upload images/video.
2. Post History.
3. "Follow Thread" link.
4. "Replies to Posts" Link.
5. "Unread Posts since last visit" link on selected message boards.
6. Improved search facility
7. Delete old posts.
8. Better Organisation of sections.
9. No Dawghouse
10. No Time-outs/Lockouts/Maintenance.

Basically the ONE thing that makes sense is what Martin posted……..

Cherno07 Jul 2015 12:09 a.m. PST

A "view new posts" button, as in PHP forums, so threads that fall off the frontpage are not forgotten isntantly.

normsmith07 Jul 2015 12:09 a.m. PST

The run time error when posting and cross posting gives me the biggest headache

accepting the new version 4 software will deal with that, then I would like to see the original poster of a thread being able to embed an image directly to help illustrate their post.

MajorB07 Jul 2015 2:08 a.m. PST

A lot of people are saying "make it easier to post photos". What you need to remember is that if TMP allowed you to upload photos to this site then Bill's storage needs would be far larger and therefore his hosting charges would be greater and then he'd probably have to increase the cost of membership to pay for it.

Captain dEwell07 Jul 2015 2:21 a.m. PST

Indexing. The ability to find things of interest will relative ease.

Mute Bystander07 Jul 2015 3:03 a.m. PST

More space for the thread tittles.

OH LORD, NO!

Just one – then this:

/mivacommon/boards/topics.mv: Line 575: MvLOCKFILE: Runtime Error: Error creating lockfile 'boards/topics.dbf.lck': Timed out waiting for lock

The biggest problem here is "We, the people…" but fallen human nature is not fixable at this time.

A nice mix "would be nice" and "Be careful of what you wish for" compounded by the Law of Unintended Consequences" so far. And a few WTH ideas…

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP07 Jul 2015 4:18 a.m. PST

I quite like it the way it is, Please don't allow those "amusing" quotes and phrases some attach to every post. Some of them might have been funny or interesting once I know. Thanks for the good work Bill.

Buckeye AKA Darryl07 Jul 2015 4:23 a.m. PST

Take your pick:

Stick to gaming, dump silly polls and political talk
Allow +1's for good posts
A complete revamp of the directories
Editing tools for posting (less dealing with creating code)
Capping the number of posts a person can enter each day

Do NOT delete old posts! I often do searches for specific topics and old posts can have a wealth of info that keeps me from having to create yet another post!

Oh Bugger07 Jul 2015 4:32 a.m. PST

"Stick to gaming, dump silly polls and political talk"

That is what is needed although it might be too late.

cloudcaptain07 Jul 2015 4:41 a.m. PST

Uploading images to the server would require Bill to pay more for storage progressively as MajorB said. You can already search by author and find all threads where someone has started a thread or replied.

Jcfrog07 Jul 2015 4:46 a.m. PST

Something to see new posts.

About our post history
I found an easy way,
I search my own " name" in authors posts on message boards and hop get it all. No need for more if getting complicated.

Maybe improve the search with more granularity. When searching inside the posts as of now it is often very long. Not every one has a modern computer with a fast internet.

Do not delete old stuff!

jeffreyw307 Jul 2015 5:07 a.m. PST

Buckeye's list looks pretty good. And please keep the old posts--they're an absolute goldmine for the Napoleonic material, if nothing else.

Personal logo Flashman14 Supporting Member of TMP07 Jul 2015 5:11 a.m. PST

Like button! I don't care that much about it but I'd use it.

Gone Fishing07 Jul 2015 5:40 a.m. PST

I'm another who is quite happy with how things are now. I agree that a cap to the number of posts and a better search feature would be nice improvements. Nuking threads that spin out of control would also be a step forward.

Bill, I have to ask, do you really intend to make any such changes? It seems as though topics like this come up quite frequently--often started by you--all the guys jump in with suggestions and…nothing happens. Again, I'm generally happy with TMP and so don't have a real bone to pick with the site, but it still feels that you occasionally stir the pot with topics like this and then walk off.

ACWBill07 Jul 2015 6:13 a.m. PST

I would like to be able to view my hobby news stories after submission and make editing changes. Once I make an error, I have no way of knowing it until publication. I would also like to have editing abilities on my advertising and news stories, including duration and location of the ad without having to rely on TMP for anything but an approval. I would be willing to pay a little extra in order to control the duration and exposure of my ads and stories with some sort of precision.

I dislike 'like' buttons. I had to deal with that 'wannabe' Facebook nonsense when updating to a newer version of Sharepoint in an office environment and I think it is entirely the wrong concept then for serious communication ('liking' a post on Child Abuse – I worked for a local authority – was a stupid – indeed abhorrent – idea and, in the same vein, how do you 'like' a post about death and destruction in the Middle East?* Awful…)

I see no need to change much – if anything – especially the look and feel: the fact that I can access the forum (in an emergency) on my old Palm Pre over a standard 2G connection suits me down to the ground, ta. New bells and whistles are of no interest to me.

Dawghouse? Don't care one way or the other: we should all behave.

A better search than the one we have? Not overly bothered.

Other's Post History? That might be useful, I guess.

But… I'm fairly fine with it as it is.

Mind you, I think the "Lounge" is an entire waste of time full of in-jokes and nonsense but I don't have to look at it if I don't want to and if it keeps the kids happy I still don't care enough to rain on someone elses parade…

Leave well alone, I say grin

John T

* Sure, there's an argument for not having those posts and – if there were a limit on the number of posts one person could make in a day – then, ahem… cough… that probably wouldn't be so much of an issue. But it' a different argument and not the one I'm making

meledward2307 Jul 2015 6:28 a.m. PST

searching specific message boards instead of everything.

BuckeyeBob07 Jul 2015 6:42 a.m. PST

+1 for Buckeye's list

Great War Ace07 Jul 2015 6:59 a.m. PST

One thing: Catalogue of specific posts that I have posted, with updated posts from others on those threads. I don't know what you call it. But a link to a page where each post, with date and time, is shown, and a link from there to each thread, showing the date and time of the latest post to said-thread….

ironicon07 Jul 2015 7:37 a.m. PST

Post photos. I have a lot of stuff I would like to share, but I'm 64 and technologically behind the times.

freewargamesrules07 Jul 2015 7:44 a.m. PST

Consistent moderation

Personal logo Condotta Supporting Member of TMP07 Jul 2015 7:47 a.m. PST

Yes, photos eat storage, yet it could be done. Some ideas are to use simpler code, cap them to a certain size and delete the photo after 10 days. As for cost, restrict direct posting of photos to supporting members, traders…give membership a perk other than what we currently have.

Winston Smith07 Jul 2015 7:55 a.m. PST

I would like to see:

A way to see the PMs that I have sent.

Consistent moderation. Either that or remove ALL moderation for "politics" on Ultramodern.
Stop the "Gotcha!" Threads started by YOU where you pounce on "cheerleaders".

Period specific editors who can do minor stuff like edit titles, crosspost appropriately. Minor housekeeping stuff. I for one would volunteer as AWI Editor. I have no axe to grind there.

Topics noted as "Rather Important" that stay at the top of a Message Board listing. I modestly propose as an example the OFM's guide to "getting started".

The ability to edit or correct for spelling thread titles by the imitator for a limited amount of time.

RavenscraftCybernetics07 Jul 2015 8:24 a.m. PST

very little.

wrgmr107 Jul 2015 8:46 a.m. PST

Better faster search engine. I find Google will bring me to a more accurate TMP post faster.

MajorB07 Jul 2015 8:56 a.m. PST

and delete the photo after 10 days.

Which would make searching TMP for old threads pointless.

MajorB07 Jul 2015 8:58 a.m. PST

Better faster search engine. I find Google will bring me to a more accurate TMP post faster.

So there's no point Bill implementing a site search engine when Google will do the job just fine.

emckinney07 Jul 2015 9:08 a.m. PST

Subscribe to posts (threads).

I could go on …

nazrat07 Jul 2015 9:15 a.m. PST

Boy Wundyr-- there already is one. Just go to Message Boards, plug in your user name, hit Author, and search. All the threads you have commented on will come up.

Weasel07 Jul 2015 9:34 a.m. PST

I'll go with the most realistic one:

Switch to some standard PHP forum software.
