How many Flashman references to adventures that were never published annoy you because GMF never got around to writing them? The ones that annoy me most are, in order: 1) The Civil War. Fighting on both sides. A prisoner in Libby Prison. Won the Congressional Medal of Honor. etc. 2) Deputy sheriff for Wild Bill Hickock. 3) Deserter from the French Foreign Legion. Both why he had to join and why he deserted. 4) With Maximilian in Mexico. 5) 55 Days at Peking I'm sure you can add others. |

Nope, never read the books. Could not care less about Flashman or George MacDonald Fraser. Lots of other fictional figures I would prefer to know more about. |

Nope, never read the books.Could not care less about Flashman or George MacDonald Fraser. Then why the hell did you post on this thread? Just to show how superior you are? |

Yeah, Mute Bystander is neither mute nor a bystander. |

Pretty much the same as you, OFM, although in almost exactly reverse order (I'd probably be more interested in the Civil War than Hickock). I'd also like to know more about Flashman during the AZW. |

AZW? The Anglo-Zanzibar War? Must've been intended as a short story! :) (The Anglo-Zulu War I know, I was making a funny) |

Haven't read but a few, so not so pained by missing any. Maximilian in Mexaco… Hmmm… AND of course, the thread title. Now, you really MUST go somewhere with that! Come to think of it, a story with an elder Sir Harry and that certain consulting detective, found in the Flashman Papers, showing good reason his 'Boswell', John W, chose never to publish, would be FASCINATING! Definitely the civil war, has potential for more than the usual amount of shenanigans. As for Mute bystander, why even look at a thread you're not interested in? |
Flashman14 | 06 Jul 2015 2:45 p.m. PST |
Flashy in the Legion would be my first pick. ACW a close second. |

Come to think of it, a story with an elder Sir Harry and that certain consulting detective, found in the Flashman Papers, showing good reason his 'Boswell', John W, chose never to publish, would be FASCINATING! That story is in 'Flashman and the Tiger', and involves Sebastian Moran ("The second most dangerous man in London"). |

Great story, and it shows Holmes completely misreading the clues. |

The Civil War was the most obvious hole in the cannon. |

Ditto 138Squadron; however, I think part of the fun of the series is reading between the lines of Flashies Who's Who entry. But even then, GMF never failed in delighting and surprising with his research and narrative. Flash as prospector; San Francisco, Black Hills, Alaska or Australia? Flashy and the Unification of Italy? |

ACW would be great. Just remember one very important element – an attractive (or 3) woman…… |
Winston Smith | 07 Jul 2015 2:00 p.m. PST |
He made reference to "a renewed bout with the elfin Mrs Mandeville". However he renewed acquaintance with her on "Angel of The Lord". But never fear. |

Yes, I agree, it is sad that he didn't write some of those books. Always enjoyed Flashman. |
TheBeast | 09 Jul 2015 11:24 a.m. PST |
it shows Holmes completely misreading the clues. Well, that might put me off a bit, but shall have a peek, nonetheless. Thanks! Doug |

Flashy at Peking would have been a really old man, into his 70s. |
Botch B | 10 Jul 2015 1:15 p.m. PST |
Harrumph, careful what you say about gentlemen in their 70s, some of us are and do not consider ourselves to be 'really old men', I'll have you know. Young puppies have been challenged for less! |

We do at least have a snapshot of a very old Flashy from "Mr American" c.1914. I'd like to know about his time in the Australian gold rush. Be interesting to put him in Glenrowan June 1880 with Ned Kelly. |
