"Slick's the Best tank commander in the regiment" – Joachim Steuben

Last weekend we played a big Slammer's game using Crucible rules and fought a battle directly taken from the Slammers stories themselves with the correct forces, for a change – although the scenery was a little off.

David Drake's story The Warrior features a Sergeant serving with Hammer's Slammers – one Samuel "Slick" Des Grieux – and his uncompromising approach to life in general and his hatred of his one time unit commander Lucas Broglie.

It was a big game using five different forces with 13 detachments: that was over 100 vehicles and just under 150 infantry.

We used 'Imperial' measurements link (ie inches and not cm for standard rules) on a big table (about 13ft by 6ft) and the game lasted about eight turns over five hours with three players.

You can play big, detailed games using The Crucible rule set.

We also used elite skills including the Special Elite character of Slick Des Grieux himself – with a new play sheet generated for a force including him – Task Force Kuykendall: PDF link

Part of the scenario's objectives was the attempt by Des Grieux to kill Broglie.

To find out if Slick succeeded (here's a hint: that's a shot of his tank, above, at the end of the game…) go to the battle report (with more pictures!) here: link

I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Thing the players said about the game on the club's internal forum:

"Great game guys, I think using imperial measurements opens up the whole game and off table artillery did help as well just need more of it.

Especially liked Hunt the Nutter mini scenario within the game, took us some time, but Alan and I eventually managed to get him after about 30 missiles were shot at him.

It also goes to show that a scenario only adds to the game, and I mean any rule set here. They make you think a bit more than the usually smash and bash games." Jim Clark

"That game did feel very "real", I think there were 3 contributing factors:

Context – we knew why we were fighting, where the battle was fought and quite a lot of backstory to the protagonists. Hunt the Nutter was a nice touch :)

Scale – this was a big game, you felt that these were big armies involved

Range – the long ranges felt very realistic

As for missiles, both Thunderbolts and Hashemites put out a lot of missile fire and on the defensive we could spend all our initiative points on upping our shooting whereas the Syncanmo/Slammers were always spending a lot on movement. Also having 2 big MLRs systems never hurts!" Alan Patrick

Thanks again, guys!

Nice game John have been thinking of doing some of the games from warrior my self :)

Good idea: they are generally well described, comstar (which is always handy) and there's a good selection of forces to use against them in the different engagements along with artillery, counter battery and artillery defence, charging along rice paddies and so forth: all useful at exploring the different elements of the rule and supplements, I have to say.

And the bonus is that they all get to use that maniac Des Grieux as well! grin

Nice.
Game looks well done.

Interested in seeing how the rules play but not for 50 USD just to see if I like them.
