Whoah

But partly untrue for the French colonial troops.
They were not sent back.
They were not allowed to parade in cities nor have much free time there. They hid them from the population, up to a point.
But they fought all the way, very well… And rag tag militia at Bir Hackeim? Hummm. Foreign legion pros etc?

The black troops let their frustration out when reaching Germany, where their behavior essentially went beyond that of second line soviets. Another thing swept under the carpet.

Never heard of Jack Churchill? Where have you been? There's a film waiting to be made if ever you saw one!

It is true that the Free French colonial troops fought very well and were also feared by the Germans. It is also true that they committed mass rape in Italy and France, which might explain why they were kept from spending their free time in cities.

The first guy has a metal song about him. Quite emotional too.

Interesting about the Japanese fella. Thanks for sharing.

I thought Brig Peter Young was the most decorated British serviceman of WW2?

Jemima Fawr12 Jul 2015 5:14 a.m. PST

Peter Young had DSO, MC & Bar.

Jack Churchill had DSO & Bar, MC & Bar, so was one DSO up on Peter Young.

Tommy MacPherson had MC & 2 Bars. I'm not sure that makes him 'The most decorated British serviceman', though an undoubted hero by anyone's standards.

I'm pretty sure that there were also some RAF officers knocking about with similar numbers of DSOs and DFCs.

Jemima Fawr12 Jul 2015 5:24 a.m. PST

Gp Capt Leonard Cheshire had VC, DSO & 2 Bars, DFC.

But even he is trumped by Wg Cdr Guy Gibson with VC, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar.

Jemima Fawr12 Jul 2015 7:38 a.m. PST

Sorry, I'm wrong. Peter Young had DSO, MC & 2 Bars.

Does Anders Lassen count? Although Danish, he held a British King's Commission with 62 Cdo/SBS when he won the VC, MC & 2 Bars…

Supercilius Maximus12 Jul 2015 9:39 a.m. PST

But even he is trumped by Wg Cdr Guy Gibson with VC, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar.

Wouldn't Cheshire's extra DSO put him ahead? I can envisage a bizarre game of "Hero Top Trumps"……

(And of course, Gibson had the dog that dare not speak its name.)

Jemima Fawr12 Jul 2015 11:07 p.m. PST

Good point. A DSO is senior to DFC, so he wins in Hero Top Trumps. :)

So would Leonard Cheshire be the top card in the whole pack?
