"Walter Blessey IV can check "50th reunion" off his bucket list this weekend as he welcomes to Biloxi fellow officers of the U.S. Army's 41st Civil Affairs Company, who served with him in Vietnam.
They'll possibly join the July 4 salute to veterans at the Sea Creatures Festival at Point Cadet at 9:30 a.m. They plan to ride a Biloxi Schooner in the afternoon, devour a shrimp boil Blessey will prepare for dinner at Chateau Blessey, a bed-and-breakfast he operates with his wife, Katherine, and cap off the day with Biloxi's fireworks show.
Only a couple of the 10 or so veterans who can travel to the reunion have ever visited the Mississippi Coast, he said. The men are in their 70s and in between the scheduled activities Blessey said they will talk about their grandchildren and "remember when."
The memories go back to early 1965. The Department of Defense had activated the 41st Civil Affairs Company, modeled after the units of occupied Germany and Japan following World War II…"
