Hi Some photos of the two games we played based on the scenarios from Thud & Blunder, a set of campaign rules for Black Powder, are at link The first game was Scenario 5, a chase game with a small patrol of British Lancers and Hussars being chased and indeed surrounded by Mahadists, using our TODD rules. The second was the classic scenario with a British square attacked by a larger Mahdist force, using Black Powder. Both played well, almost as if scripted to go that way. The chase featured a single handed charge by Trooper Bell into a wadi full of Fuzzy-wuzzies which saved the rest of the patrol and earned him a VC. The attack on the squre saw the Ansar actually push the defenders (Black Watch and RMLI) back in two places, over run the guns and get into the square, but lack the forces to follow up the advantage allowing the Scots Guards to plug the gap on one side and the RMLI to rally on the other. I'd post some tasters but I can't see how to at the moment…

Mike, What wonderful pageantry in your games! I also like the unique and clever way the ship models are displayed in one of the photos. Rick |

Makers – mostly Armies In Plastic armiesinplastic.com who do a fantastic range of 54mm Mahdist and Imperialist figures. Supplemented with other figures and conversions of plastic and metal (eg the 21st Lancers are Little Legion castings converted a little and painted, Irregular Miniatures Dervish castings ditto). There are also some W Britains metal painted figures there, both sides. But the bulk are good old AIP who do infantry, cavalry and artillery! Until they came along the Sudan in 54mm was a pipe dream but now all the types involved are there either just to paint or easily convert. The cavalryman with the Broomhandle Mauser is a figure of Young Winston as he was with the 21st Lancers at Omdurman, sold originally by TS&MF magazine. He lost his right arm in combat and I had to replace it with a new arm and gun. |

Brilliant looking game, very inspiring. 54mm is truly the scale of gentlemen. I have hordes of AiP Sudan minis in a box. Someday when I actually have the space for 54mm gaming I will finish that project… |

The games look absolutely incredible. I'd love to know how you handle table space with games like that featuring the square; it doesn't look like there's that much space around the formation. Do you have some system of tracking approaching hostiles ("Right, fellows, the Red Flag is now 9" from the table edge", etc.)? Thank you very much for sharing. And I couldn't agree more regarding 54's. They are the One True Scale, after all. |

Great looking set up! What is TODD? |
Moe Ronn | 03 Jul 2015 4:44 p.m. PST |
TODD is Tales of Derring Do-the rules Skirmish Wargames (Mike's crew) uses for much of their gaming. Don't know if they've made it available anywhere. |

Thanks for all the kind words. Yes, TODD are our in-house Skirmish rules, whilst TODD_Squad are the small unit version. I can send an electronic copy to anyone who PMs me there email address. With BP we use 3/4 distances. And of course with the potential for a 3 move turn, the Navites (our generic term for all peoples oppressed by the Imperialists) have a real chance of getting at the square before they can be stopped. Just like in the accounts of real battles where they seemed to rise out of the ground from nowhere! The ships models on the beams include a couple of gunboats that were going to feature in one of the games, but we ran out of steam (sorry, I'll get my coat). Four games proved plenty over the two days, but the idea was to have a Mahdist boat taking on a British one! The moment when the sunlight coming through on of the roof-lights centered on the square was just magic-it was easy to see which side the gods were on! |
