link The Asia-Pacific region is upgrading their military capabilities, and Australia may be facing the possibility of a "lucky Punch" from various modern weapons. |

There is certainly a regional arms race going on – the Chinese being the big push behind it |

I read somewhere that they think there'll be 1,000+ subs in the world's navies in short order. I was a bit shocked by that. Have no idea what the current number is, but suspect it is down a bit for the US, and Russians, but increasing for the Chinese. I suspect the Japanese may be holding things fairly level. I know much of Europe has slashed their naval power, but did read Sweden was planning on building a couple of new subs. |

A lucky punch would seriously off us and most probably the rest of the commonwealth. We would be over there or thereabouts in a shot. End of discussion .. :) |

… no surprises here! We could take losses in a war. The lucky shot is easier to get off if the target isn't prepared, but they always can occur. I would argue that Army Combat Brigades should have organic Area Denial weapons to help mitigate the risk of losing Naval support. And a little diplomacy goes a long way – all of the countries mentioned are friends of ours at present. |

hmmm, nothing new in this. We have always faced the smart weapons, at least since the mid 80's when most of the regions navies boasted missile armed patrol boats and aircraft capable of delivering exocets or the equivalent. Indonesia had a capable submarine force in the 80's as well. Not so much a lucky shot scenario as opposed to an idiocy scenario. If capital assets were deployed without support and intelligence and without the means to defend against ASM and SSM, let alone subs, you would question the sanity of our military leaders. |

straylightOz: "If capital assets were deployed without support and intelligence and without the means to defend against ASM and SSM, let alone subs, you would question the sanity of our military leaders." The trick is to always question the sanity of _any_ of our leaders. It helps forestall the inevitable maniac at the wheel scenario. |
