I recently picked up these rules for medieval skirmishes and they look rather interesting. It took me about 2 read throughs to really get an idea of how the rules work though. anyone else hear about these rules and actually give them a game? any thoughts? I have several rules that I am itching to give a try, but so little time so I am trying to prioritize which ones should I try first. |

Like you, I recently picked up these rules along with the 1066 supplement, but haven't had a chance to try them out yet. I agree that they look interesting. I'll be curious to see what you thought once you've given them a spin. |

yeah, looks like not a lot experience with the rule set yet from anyone. When I was making the forces to play, it occured to me that i was naturally building the unit (at the medium level of the game rules) to act in groups. basically just 2 groups roving around because that would be the most effecient way to move to the figures. and i was worried that the game would quickly devolve into just groups moving into each other which is not really a man to man skirmish. |

I also have picked up a copy of Lords and Servants and have not yet had a chance to play. I have, however, played Smooth and Rifled by the same author, which covers the 17th through late 19th centuries. Many of the mechanics are the same and I can say that I have found the S&R rules to be fun and easy to play (after you get the hang of them). Stew, my experience is indeed that this is a game of small units with a few individuals playing important roles (leaders and specialists) rather than a man to man skirmish game. That said, combat, especially hand to hand combat, is really about individuals fighting. If you have the AP you may want to activate some figures as individuals. And shaken men can end up as individuals as well. In any event, I have found S&R to be a fun game and expect L&S to be similar. I hope to try them out soon! |
