Looking for recommendations for Submarine Movies to add to my DVD Collection.

I have the following:

Thanks!

Run Silent, Run Deep
Written by a veteran submariner. The movie is based on his book.

RedLion28101 Jul 2015 2:43 p.m. PST

What?! No U-571 starring John Bon Jovi?

inverugie01 Jul 2015 2:45 p.m. PST

There can only be one 'Das Boot (Director's Cut)'; but I also have fond memories of 'Run Silent, Run Deep' and 'Above Us the Waves'.

Up Periscope – With James Garner from 1959. Pretty good as I recall.

I have the book (Run Silent, Run Deep); forgot all about the movie with Gable and Lancaster!

Winston Smith01 Jul 2015 3:09 p.m. PST

The Winds of War and War and Remembrance is a rather decent sweeping family saga from the 70s.
Bryon had a submarine career when he wasn't gallivanting about Europe rescuing his rather dense love interest from the Nazis.

Hunt for Red October

15mm and 28mm Fanatik01 Jul 2015 3:16 p.m. PST

"The Hunt for Red October" starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin

"Crimson Tide" starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington

"Down Periscope" starring Kelsey Grammer

John Treadaway01 Jul 2015 3:34 p.m. PST

Crimson Tide is one of my all time favourite films. Hackman and Washington have never been better and the scenes with them both in are brilliant.

Directed by the late Tony Scott.

I always like 'Down Periscope', they should re-write it for Star Trek.

Gone Fishing01 Jul 2015 3:49 p.m. PST

There's always Operation Petticoat!

jpattern201 Jul 2015 4:03 p.m. PST

And don't forget the only submarine movie I know of with the word "submarine" in the title:

Yellow Submarine

Mako1101 Jul 2015 4:28 p.m. PST

The Bedford Incident (Cold War goodness).

Major Mike01 Jul 2015 4:55 p.m. PST

Come Hell or High Water, recovered u-boat used to make a heist on an ocean liner.

BrianW01 Jul 2015 5:09 p.m. PST

I think the movie Major Mike is talking about is "Assault On A Queen," about robbing the Queen Mary. Saw the movie and read the book. Good as a kid, but don't know how well the movie would hold up now.

Operation Pacific (1951) with John Wayne may not be a great submarine movie but it is a pretty good movie, and I liked the submarine parts too….

Sundance01 Jul 2015 5:30 p.m. PST

Everything I had to offer have been written already except for Operation Petticoat.

Crash Dive
Das Boot
Destination Tokyo
The Enemy Below
The Hunt for Red October
Ice Station Zebra
Operation Petticoat
Run Silent, Run Deep
Submarine X-1
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

Das Boot is by far the best of the lot.

Each of the others offers something interesting and unique in their own way.

"The Key"(1958) – about rescue tugs in the Western Approaches – good action sequence with a U-boat on the surface

Best is still Das Boot though

Great – Thanks to all who responded!

Coelacanth02 Jul 2015 4:46 a.m. PST

Hell and High Water, mentioned above, is a Cold War submarine drama with Richard Widmark.

Well not too much submarine action but there always is
"On the Beach"

DeRuyter02 Jul 2015 9:51 a.m. PST

Das Boot by far – but it must be the proper German language version.

RavenscraftCybernetics02 Jul 2015 10:11 a.m. PST

You all missed the best one!

"Black Sea" with Jude Law doesn't even get a mention? Ok, it had a couple, or a half dozen, major plot flaws, but it was still pretty cool.

ptdockyard03 Jul 2015 9:37 a.m. PST

"Crash Dive" with the USS Marlin (As the USS Corsair) taking on German raiders and a base in Norway.

Mute Bystander03 Jul 2015 7:29 p.m. PST

Destination Tokyo.

Edit: I am prone to stick with WW2 movies for submarines:

Well, thanks to the recommendations here I picked up a new copy of Run Silent Run Deep at my local grocery store for $3.99 USD!

Another one worth checking out is "Phantom" (2013) a fictionalised and hypothesized version of the loss of K 129 using a sort of one silo Zulu instead of a three silo Golf.

It stars Ed Harris as a sub-commander facing his own demons and one of the many Foxtrot subs that can be found in odd places around the world.

Cheers,
Bertie

"Balance of Terror" is a classic.

"Hostile Waters" is interesting, it is not a movie but a BBC/HBO made for TV release, but if Star Trek's homage to the Enemy Below can be included, (and very rightly so Rick, both were great leadership training,)I suppose it makes the grade. It is based on the sinking of the K 219 and its alleged collision with the USS Augusta. For Wing Nuts like me it includes the fun sight of Martin Sheen playing out of his usual character as the US sub commander who wants to take no chances and blow the Soviet sub out of the water.

Cheers,
Bertie
