I've been thinking about it for a year or two as one way to satisfy my Imaginations graving. I really don't have any background fluff, but I know there was a lot going on at the time, such as the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and the Bonus Army march on Washington.

Some thoughts are: Cali and Texas split to become republics; there will be an equivalent of the Union, maybe I'll call it the Republic; maybe a Confederation of Sovereign States; some communists and fascists, labor and Blacks (some Republicans, some communist, some looking for a state of their own); I like the sound of a Kentucky Free State …

Being from SW Ohio, I like the idea of Cincinnati, Northern KY, and the Ohio River playing key parts. In addition to its duties on the river, the Ohio Naval Militia will have to throw some type of land expeditionary force into the fray. Cinci was home to lots of Germans as well, and they are not going to sit around and do nothing.

I'm leaning towards 1/72 plastics, supplemented by some metal pieces. I can get a lot of variety and, overall, this will be one of the cheaper options.

I'm not sure if I want 10-20 man "units" or companies using something like TSATF, or whether I want to use a Hordes in The Trenches type system and use element stands as the basic unit.

So, anyone out there gaming, collecting, or thinking about a VACW?

There's a mod for the excellent PC game Darkest Hour called Kaiserreich that has an American Civil War in 1936/7. You might find interesting, and it is certainly a fun (if old) game. It's set up between Huey Long's "America First" ( Southern-based psuedo-Fascists), Jack Reed's "Combined Syndicates of America" (Communists) based in the Industrial belt, with MacArthur (as a kind of dictator) leading the Federalists to try and defeat both. Kaiserreich's alt history aside (Germany won wwi), I think a 3-sided Civil War could be just what you're looking for.
