I was doing some research for my 15mm Warhammer project and got a bit sidetracked when I noticed how content relating to Bretonnia changed quite considerably over issues 129-158.

So being a total geek I had to check each issue and write a blog post about what I found… Maybe someone somewhere might find it as interesting as I did?!

Thanks for reading!

They did have more character back then. Mounted and dismounted knights with weapons, etc. I found those pictures in White Dwarf many moons ago. That was one of my first armies. I called GW in the UK when you could to mail order troll and be able to get the older oop ranges. They were great to deal with and they made up the army that was listed in the WD. They were some nice Perry sculpts and I do believe you can still get them from Foundry.

Yes, I always liked the Perry Bretonnians.

What I really found interesting though was how there was a brief period where quite a few articles appeared relating to Bretonnia and then they just vanished pretty much, even though they were talking about showing off the army 'when it was finished.' Very odd.

Right. They went away and then suddenly reappeared redone with the Lizardmen box set. The character of the army was not the same.

Did anyone actually use them during the 4th Edition period, when there was no army book and the only list was the 'get you by' one in the boxed set?

Does the transition have anything to do with when Citadel miniatures split from Foundry, etc.? Maybe the change in aesthetic was due to needing a new miniatures range?

Interesting. I could see why that might lead to a distinct change in focus and direction. I don't have the answer to the question though.

You cannot get all of the old Bretonnians from Foundry. Specifically you cannot get most of the mounted knights (only the ones in the Barons War range, aka ex-Citadel Feudals range), and most of the foot knights. The Foundry HYWs are indeed IIRC ex-Citadel, just major gaps in the range that did not come over.

Damon.

Did the missing Citadel not come over to Foundry, or did they actually come over but Foundry has mislaid them in their piles of discontinued sculpts? It seems Foundry's cataloging system is often partly to blame for OOP and presumed missing sculpts.
