I have done a search for these, but what do you think are the best miniature rules for skirmishing (ground forces)Star Wars and why?

Stepman330 Jun 2015 8:19 a.m. PST

FUBAR. Fast and simple. They have a good set of special rules for all the SW factions.

Not sure what's the best (I suspect you'll never get a conclusive answer to that…especially not here!) but here are a few rules I've tried in my hunt for good SW rules…

West End Games Star Wars Miniature Battles (some thoughts on these rules on my blog here… link )
Song of Mutants and Death Ray Guns
Tomorrows War
Laserburn
Stargrunt

…all have their strengths and flaws and in some cases need a lot of tweaking but these might be a starting point.

I have used Fubar for my Clone War Games. However, they are rather large. I use 200+ infantry and have 30+ vehicles on the tabletop. The Star Wars stats for the Clone Wars and Imperial periods were created by me for Fubar. Another gent created a very nice file for them along with unit cards spelling everything out. Very well done and available on the Fubar yahoo group.

When I say what are the best, I am asking, if your are going to skirmish Star Wars, what rules would you use. Why is that your preference. I appreciate the feedback.

Blasters and Bulkheads is a good option. It's a goalsystem game and though the second edition is a bit wider in scope, the first edition was a pretty blatant not-star-wars ruleset. It even had a guy with a lightsaber on the cover!

It has rules for essence (the force) and the goalsystem division between individual heroes and groups of relatively faceless mooks (stormtroopers, rebels, etc) seems very well suited for recreating star wars type battles.

I think we only played it a couple times and it was the first edition, but I remember liking the rules.

My little group of SW devotees are looking at using "Age of Saints " by Iron Ivan , basically a sci fi version of disposable Heroes and quite easy to discern the similarity ( and influence ) of Star Wars themed forces. I am right into Old Republic themed games while my mate continues with his Rebel forces but once its all on the table it looks and works very well.
Try them out if you can, well worth it and lots of possibilities , cheers Tom

Just another point after having a quick flick at Age of Saints again . It allows different types of armour , mobility's and weapons stat lines and Force Powers and also allows you to add bits to vehicles to customise them even more . The only thing I have seen missing is mounted troops of any type. There is also the option to add Bounty Hunter and Criminal elements tot he forces as mercanaries.
Fubar is another good option for platoon sized games and Mutants and Death ray Guns worked very well for "gang" type combats . cheers Tom

You could use the Star Wars: Imperial Assault skirmish rules.

Second the skirmish rules in Imperial Assault from Fantasy Flight Games.

With the help of some friends I came up my own set of Star Wars rules.

The rules are based on Sword and the Flame Colonial rules and as such it's a card driven game.

I came up with the idea because I wanted to recreate the Huge Battle from Episode I The Phantom Menace where the Gungan Grand Army fought the Droid Army of the Trade Federation.

Mostly I used the figures from the WOTC Star Wars collectible gaming figures where I have over 300 Gungans and a similar number of Battledroids.

I also have a Faamba which was a toy used with 3 1/2 inch figures but I found that it was very close in scale with the WOTC figures.

I also acquired 2 of the Gungan Catapults some of the Droid hover tanks again very close in scale with the figures.

After working on the rules I and a very good friend ran the Battle of Grassy Plains at a local convention in 2009 and it worked pretty well and my friend(who sadly passed away later that year)without him and the others couldn't have made this possible.

I've run the game 9-10 times with the Gungans and Droids winning about half the games with one draw.

After that I started working on my second game which was the Geonosis Arena Battle from Attack of the Clones which have worked out well too and I'm trying to work on another game which is called Jedi vs Sith where I have a lot of Jedi taking on a lot of Sith again all figures(for the most part are from the WOTC sets.

I appreciate the input. I'm checking out the rules that you have suggested. Isn't Imperial Assault a board game?
