"The Gaze" is the theoretical view of the game, determined by the rules, of the players. That is, at what point does the player "enter" the game. At what position and level does he view the game. Should this gaze be narrowly focused at the information, challenges, and problems of that position wherever it is from PFC to Field Marshall, or should the gaze be generalized and strictly impersonal, as a facilitator of the army as specified by the rules. The former restricts game actions to the "gaze" of the person or position the player is in command, or should the player have the whole of the army from top to bottom as his care and his "gaze" be universal. That is, from checking the flints and gaiter straps of the privates to large scale maneuvers. |

In my opinion the answer is yes or what you end up with are the now infamous (but very hard to find) monster games where nothing ever happens because Montgomery is too busy deciding what kind of ammo each tank needs to load and so never orders his corps to advance. Or when Napoleon spends all day positioning skirmishers for each battalion at Leipzig. "Should" doesn't enter in to it. To each his own. |

Gaze is just a meta thing that really only impinges when assumptions within the rules are not explicit and or agreed with by the players. |

It should be the same as the real life commander of the same rank. A battalion commander should not care about details that would affect units smaller than a platoon, for instance. It makes the game move along more quickly in the long run. |

All games are, in principle, the same size. The rules determine the scope of the 'gaze'. Failure to work within the scope of the rules just makes you a bad player, not a bad general. |

Seems like player situational awareness, at the point where you can see opportunities and a timing situation that…could…work…. |
