Anyone seen and/or use the 15mm Tin Soldier UK figures – specifically their Italian colonials abyssinians for the Adowa campaign in 1896? Or can you recommend any other figures in 15mm for this conflict? |

1. No, but I believe size can vary from range to range. I have a few of their Aztecs they're big. 2. Blackhat do them but I aint seen 'em. |

1. Yes. 2. In contrast with the chunkiness of most of its figures this range is very Minifig in terms of pack/range structure and sculpting style. In fact, I strongly suspect that it was sculpted by one of that company's designers who did a fair bit of work for various antipodean figure manufacturers back in the 80s. Unfortunately, they based the Abyssinians on line drawings that accompanied an article in an old issue of Miniature Wargames, which depicted an assortment of obscure tribes from (and beyond) the fringes of the empire (including Masai!), and did one pack of each with one pose per pack – and completely neglected typical Abyssinian tribesmen. Irregular has a few figures depicting true Abyssinians, but again there's only one pose per type. Years ago Gladiator had a complete range that might still be out there somewhere, but if you can find it you'd have to be very forgiving of the crude, distorted, moon-face sculpting style; the figures don't really look like human beings (but consequently they might make excellent moon-men for VSF games). |

I have quite a few of the Abyssinian tribesmen for the the most part they are much as illustrated in the Osprey and previous Italian book by Raffaele Ruggeri. I will admit that the Masai (who do not look like any pictures I have seen) are problematic, and I am not sure about Denali tribesmen. However they have Galla, more correctly Oromo tribesmen (galla is like calling someone a thug) as well as Shoa and other tribesmen tribesmen are included. Further the Italians are quite nice. |

The Gladiator figures were very reminiscent of the Gallia colonials, even to the same style of crudely sculpted firearms, and were probably designed by the same person; perhaps even intentionally so as to match the Gallia Sudan range. One peculiarity was that some of them had DB shotguns! |
