Not a vital question but responses would help us out.
The generals in the forthcoming "Regiment of Foote" ECW rules will have attributes/gifts of "defence", "attack" or "morale".
To this end i have designed markers to go with the bgeneral's base so atht both players know what attributes he has. So i asked the group what colours to do the markers that would re inform the recognition. The most popular is red for attack, green for defence and amber fr morale. This is good but I wonder if there is a system whereby the attack colour would begin with an A and the defned begin with a D etc. To make it easier to remember?

A curious question I know , but it might inform players more easily about a general's ability..I woild ike the marker to be claerky identifiable.it does already have embossed lettering on it.

Not sure.
thanks for your time

If I might hi-jack your thread for a moment? I used to play RoF all the time. Could you say, briefly, what is different, if anything, about the forthcoming version? Thanks.

I can't imagine Amber, Dun, and Mauve (for instance) being easier to remember – or to recognise – than Red/Green/Amber or even than a primary Red/Blue/Yellow.

I might suggest, besides the embossed letters, also making each marker a different shape. Not everyone can see and differentiate all colours…

OTOH … Red means stop … Attack means go. So I'd suggest it might be more intuitive to have Attack as Green/Go … Defend as Red/Resist …

I had same thought as Phil, if you use traffic lights.. then red must equal stop, and green must equal go..

OTOH, red symbolises the shedding of blood one would expect in an attack…

I'm slightly concerned that red sashes were often used as a symbol of allegiance to the King, amber/orange to Parliament, whilst green was adopted by Levellers. Might the counters be mistaken as signifying political allegiance?

Then again, red/green confusion is the most common form of colour blindness…

I will go back to the group with traffic lights. Amber, mauve would be great, but I take the point.

New ROF rules
3x4 feet into 6" sqaures. No diagonal movement. Foot regiment typically 2 bases of musket and 1 base of pike/command. Units live and die by the half base. Cavalry 2 bases. Foot bases 3x3 cav bases 3x4 just like in all other PP rules.
New mechanisms for scenery, cannonade, arrivals, pre-game etc. games lasting just under 2 hours.
Foot shooting1 square range.
Foote mive usually 2 squares. cav move usually 4 squares.
Quality classes conscript, trained and veteran.

Ecah player gets 4 turns (alternately) but can pay for extra turns.
Sean and Michael are peparing battle scenarios for Naseby and Lansdown at the momemt\Morale is initiated if there are casualties, ten modifiers etc.
Any particular aspect I can explain more/?
thanks

martin goddard,

A couple of new RoF questions . . .

Our armies are in 28mm . . . will there be an addendum for changes if using that scale?

Also shipping costs to those of us scattered about the globe can be prohibited . . . will there be a .pdf option?

Thanks for the explanation.

Sounds intriguing. Now just have to figure out how to play without a table marked off into squares…..

There will be a pdf version. 25mm will use 8" squares and 40mm square bases

PDF version is very good news. I suppose I can reduce the squares to fit my figures and the space I have available.

Martin, as a schoolmaster who knows from experience that most of today's youngsters have only the haziest idea of inches, feet &c., might I suggest that you express both the squares and the base sizes in mm, rather than mixing metric and Imperial measuremnts?

Looking forward to the new RoF!
