Amazon is offering this book; 'Waterloo : Roman historique illustré' by Emile Erckmann, Alexandre Chatrian, & Patrice Courcelle. Does anyone know anything about it? I am tempted as my reading French is not bad and Patrice Courcelle is one of my favourite painters. However, I do not want to buy it and find that it is simply a collection of pictures we are already familiar with. Anyone have a recommendation?

The Amazon UK listing has 6 images of the book including a few from inside. Might help.

Yawn. How about a book 9n a battle that doesn't already have hundreds…

Schogun, saw the Amazon listing. The pictures shown are already familiar. I was hoping for more elsewhere in the book that were new.

This book is not a historical analysis of the battle. It is a novel. It follows the earlier "conscript of 1813" (which I've read). It is the story of a young Man from Eastern France (on the Belgian border), who has to leave his countryside to join the army.

Of course there is combat description, but really centered around the hero – who is no Sharpe but a simple, humble private. He's a witness to the glory and horror of the war. It describes also very well the life and traditions on the German border.

I think it is good, sometimes, to read such books which look at history with a completely different angle.

It would be great if it was translated into English for us language ignoramus'.

IIRC correctly, there was a 'graphic novel' presentation of the story by an American publisher in the 1960s/1970s?

They somehow got from Rocroi to Waterloo… but what are a few details when there is an important agenda to push!
