"Most of us would probably complain while wrapping a birthday present, imagine one day at work you are told to wrap a First World War tank, safely. Truly a humongous task, the prize showpiece at Queensland Museum, an old German tank, has been literally cocooned to be transported to south for an exhibition. Most of the material used in wrapping the tank is felt and plastic. Named ‘Mephisto', this last remaining and fully intact A7V Sturmpanzerwagen from the First World War was taken in by Queensland soldiers as a Souvenir. In July 1918, Mephisto was spotted by the soldiers near a French town Villers Bretonneau…"

"… maybe check with Australia Post. I'm sure we sent it back…" What plots can we hatch to keep Mephisto in Canberra! Armand, good find. The AWM has a number of WW1 tanks but no A7Vs. My friends and I will have a photo session when it arrives. Buenos Dias, Foxtrot |

A really cool and interesting article. I still find myself staring at the paint scheme as I would have never guessed to paint any German vehicle like it. I also noted that the machine gun sleeves are different colors as well. Larry |

Freeman, I am not sure about the paint scheme. Fifty years ago, if my memory is correct, it was painted light grey. In the Osprey book on Mark IV vs A7V (Villers-Bretonneaux, 1918 – yes, where Mephisto was captured) the A7Vs are either in a single colour or the usual WW1 "look at me" camouflage patterns – nothing like it's current colour scheme. There is a picture of Mephisto in green with what appears to be a couple of washes of other colours but I wouldn't count on it's historical accuracy. Pictures at the time in black and white are possibly a single colour with battle damage (scroll down TMP link ) Have a great day, Foxtrot |

The replica A7V ("Wotan") at the German Panzer Museum in Munster is painted a solid light gray/green. Check the photos about a third of the way down the site: link |

The first time i saw "Mephisto" many years ago in QLD it was light green or possible sun faded green ,it had been repainted a few times and was in a sorry looking state. The vehicle had been left out in the elements for a few years at that stage. I don't think the MG's were reproduced very accurately but I'm glad to see the beast restored somewhat and visit it every time I go to Brissie , cheers Tom |
