I'm looking for recs on books that give a good overall history of the Thirty Year War, for someone who has a pretty limited knowledge of the period. |

I'm a newbie as well. to date (apart from Ospreys) the only one I've read is C.V. (Cicely Veronica) Wedgwood's "The Thirty Years War". It's beautifully written & helps untangle the period nicely. It's light on military detail but gave me a solid background on the war. I do aim to read more: I'm looking for a decent tome on GAIII. |

I have only read the Wedgwood book, Geoffrey Parker's "The Thirty Years War" and The Thirty Years War: Europe's Tragedy by Peter H Wilson. Of the three I think the latter is the best, it breaks down the conflict into chunks in the most understandable way. |

Not read Parkers, but the other two are worth a read. Wilson is huge though. |

Another vote for CV Wedgewood. |
