I am thinking of getting into Napoleonics, in a limited and frugal way. Can anyone recommend any histories or memoirs in the public domain which deal with the Peninsular War? TIA! |

You can find both Napier and Oman in the public domain. Search Peninsular War in Google Books and you'll turn up loads of freebies. If you're intrigued enough to drop a few dollars, look up books by Charles Esdaile. He writes on Spanish history and has covered the Peninsular War in a few books… |

Thanks for that, Extra Crispy. I suppose what I am most looking for is an overview. It looks like rather confused theater, with more than the usual measures of ferocity and betrayal. I'm also interested in naval warfare in the theater. I will start with your recommendations, as I recognize the names. It is sort of fun to start a fresh gaming period. |

"The Spanish Ulcer" by Gates is very good too, except for the sub-par maps. |

The web is also a great source. Just start with Wikipedia then google napoleonic warfare and you will be amazed at what resources show up: maps, tactical guides, histories |

The problem is where to start? This is such a massive period with such a large body of literature that it is hard to know where to start. I have gotten into Oman though and am enjoying it very much. That was precisely the overview I needed. Long, but I am enjoying it. Thanks to all who answered! |
