"The Navy has accepted the second Virginia-class (SSN-774) Block III nuclear attack submarine from Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding, the service announced on Thursday. The $2.5 USD billion John Warner (SSN-785) completed sea trials in mid-June and delivered three months ahead of schedule following a consistent trend of early deliveries and reduced cost for the Virginia-class. "Like the ship before her, USS North Dakota, John Warner delivered ahead of schedule and within budget," Rear Adm. David Johnson, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) program executive officer for submarines, said in a statement. "The crew of John Warner has upheld the standard of excellence in the Virginia Class program." The 7,800-ton Warner — named for Secretary of the Navy and U.S. Senator John Warner — is scheduled to commission in August…" Full article here link link Amicalement Armand |

*sigh* I really wish we'd stop naming ships for politicians… There are something like 300 good names of WW2 subs alone, to say nothing of the cruisers (city names) and battleships (States). |

Politians control the purse strings and because most are ego maniacs that want a legacy….. Thankfully our navy isn't yet contaminated by such ego stroking. |

At least Warner was a veteran of both WWII (USN) and Korea (USMC) as well as serving as SecNav. The Navy has a long history of naming ships for former Secretaries of the Navy. See: USS Forrestal USS Charles F. Adams USS Curtis D. Wilbur USS Josephus Daniels USS George Bancroft USS Abel P. Upshur USS George E. Badger USS Paulding USS Woodbury USS Crowninshield USS Paul Hamilton USS Robert Smith USS Benjamin Stoddert The baffling, dare I say infuriating, example is USS Gabrielle Giffords. Representative Giffords sole notable achievement was to survive a gunshot wound to the head and her only known connection to the US military was to marry an astronaut. |

A few decades ago our gaming group had a power gamer who was very obnoxious – it was very hard not to try to destroy his umber units (yes he also had extreme political views that he brought to the club) – even when he was on your own side! I'm fanatically opposed to fanatics! ;-) |

Quick straw poll – Naming of ships in fictional games- do you like to make up your own? Use historical? Draw from fiction? It's just a type and/or number (DDG-7) I've used all three (great ship names in Brinn's "Player of games"), for quick games (especially high attrition ) I prefer type and number. Campaign names are a must! What do you use? |

Small craft are numbered, not named. I tend to pull historical names for campaigns. However, I also tend to follow whatever national naming styles. So a Chinese submarine would simply have a type-name and number, while a cruiser would be named after a river. |

I always have trouble with HMS INVINCIBLE – well it more of a problem with my opponent who when they sink it has a bit of a laugh… ;~-( |

Yeah, HMS Invincible does have a bit of a "challenge accepted" ring to it. |

G'day all I'm back from a deserved stay in the DH I apologise for any offence caused by my comments to all readers and Mrs Clinton and Mr Bush Back to gaming and ship names If you were to name three ships for use in a game what would those names be? (Assuming they can not be a persons name nor Enterprise*) Mine would be: Daring Intrepid Havock Ps if the name is not in English could you provide a translation for those of us stuck with just one language :-) Thanks! (* in a Starfleet Battles Campaign my Orion Pirate ships include: Free Enterprise, Bottom Dollar, Hostile Aquisition, Forced Merger, Before Tax Profit etc ) |

Would you correct the spelling error for Havock? Or keep it, as more original? |

Which ever floats your boat ;- P I prefer Havoc …. ;-) |

I am somewhat tempted to name one ship the Post-Dated Check Loan… (aka "Petey" from Schlock Mercenary) Related ships in that line: Bristlecone, Longgunner of the Apocalypse, Tunguska, Chixulcub… Arcadia (Captain Harlock's ride) Silvana (from Last Exile) But really, the ship names I'd choose vary with the type of culture that deployed the ships. Culture names get bonus points for ship-names, though. |

I agree about cultural names, I suppose I was thinking if you were designing the culture as well and my Anglo-Saxon focus coloured my views. |
