The Sunday after Phalanx we got together for a big ECW battle … a what if scenario based on the relief of Gloucester in 1643.

The rules were a modified version of Pike & Shotte and worked reasonably well. We all had a great time and got a result after a couple of busy sessions.

There's more on this game on ECWBattles/Gloucester what if

Interesting changes. Did the broken terrain with the hedgerow have a big influence on play?

Yes, it was a tough obstacle to take (affecting shooting, giving a +1 against chargers, slowing movement and potentially causing disorder) … my troops got through it several times but were caught in a trap beyond (stalled by disorder, shaken by incoming hits from fresh defenders etc.) and thrown back out. Probably about right although I'd be tempted to halve shooting entirely within the enclosures (also I'm not sure about guns in hedges – well not sure about guns, period, really) …

A good test, though (and a good game) …

How long did your game take? One of my issues with B.P. Shotte & Pike is that it does play rather quickly and with all the cavalry units present in most ECW battles the armies reach break point rather quickly, long before the infantry gets to do much.

I'd say 4hrs, tops, actual play, davbenbak. Allowing it was 8 players and a leisurely affair.

Interesting comment re the horse … it was the breaking of the horse that settled the game (and in the unsatisfactory Naseby refight a couple of years back, again it was the breaking of the horse – improbably Rupert's, who were causing mayhem but not without losses – that settled it).

In the Gloucester game, at least, one big infantry command was slugging it out from the start (and I was knocking on the 50% rule by game end) … but the other foot command did spend much of the game uncommitted.

In the adaptation of Armati on my blog, the victory requirement includes breaking a proportion of the foot (deliberately so – as you say, the proportion of horse in ECW is quite high but although the fight on the flanks is decisive, it is not the whole story) …
