The information on how a foot gunner was equipped personally is clear for some armies (e.g. British and French as infantrymen) but for others the information is unclear or contradictory. With regard to the Portuguese Army of 1812 and the Dutch-Belgians of 1815, does anyone know how their foot artillery was equipped? Some illustrations show full British-style equipment complete with musket while others show only an 'artillery short sword'. The Cent Jour site which is usually so reliable just adds to the confusion. Anyone with any idea? |

Weren't artillery muskets issued for guard duty mostly? Even if all gunners had them, they would probably have been stacked out of the way when manning the guns, and thus unlikely to be picked up in an emergency? |
