Sweet ! COL John Lampugh's regt.- the only one of Newcastles regiments that we have some knowledge of the units Colours. Though the flags of Newcastles own large regiment may have been red |

Yes with white crosses I think. I nearly used it and will if I paint up another Whitecoat unit. |

That's the one though the white border is new to me. |

When I cut out and glued the flag I accidentally left the white border on. Oh well . . . |

The white crosses are becomeing "acceptable" but there is no actual evidence for that precise pattern. It is only one possible interpretation of the written deswcription that survives- and the description may not even be for Newcastles- still they look sweet . |

Nice figures and painting in both units guys! Does anyone know about the blue hats? The reason I ask is that I know two 'real' historians personally and both have links with Warlord Games which is coincidental as they don't know each other, and one of them is working on the new ECW book from Warlord. Anyway when I asked them about the hats on separate occasions one said that they never wore them and it's all a big mistake and the other said that they did indeed wear them. |
Oh Bugger | 06 Jul 2015 3:54 a.m. PST |
Newcastle did indeed buy "Scotch bonnets" for his men and its reasonable to think at least some of them wore them. Even someone as wealthy as Newcastle did not throw money away. |
OldGlory Andy | 06 Jul 2015 7:15 a.m. PST |
I concur with Mr ! Numbers of Newcastles officers were Scottish and some at least "went home" when scoland sided with Parliamanet the bonnets may not have been universal amongst Newcastle troops but were certainly worn. |

Thanks Guys! So a smattering of bonnets in a unit would be the way to go then. |

In the Surtees Society's papers there is a document of the late 1640s claiming that in 1642 the Earl of Newcastle purchased 3,000 "blew bonnets" for his army, and elsewhere, that they were "Scotch bonnets". How many of his army was still wearing them in 1644 is anybody's guess. |

Yes a scattering- perhaps a heavy scattering -. In late 1643 Newcastle claimed he had 5000 marching foot- ie exclusive of garrisons. One suspects that untis raisedin the more southerly parts of his command didn't get to see blue bonnets until the scots came |
