"Late 2014 and early 2015 saw an abundance of new books published with a focus on the Battle of Waterloo and the wider Napoleonic Wars. However, Napoleonic Leadership stands out from the other titles because it examines Napoleon's style of leadership in a way perhaps not considered in other histories about the emperor. Indeed, it is not strictly a history at all, rather an academic text aimed at aiding the study of leadership as a subject in itself. Yet despite this, this title will appeal to both the student of leadership and Napoleon alike. The authors are also both well placed to produce such a work, being university professors who teach leadership but also have a strong personal interest in the Napoleonic period.

The book is divided into eight chapters that consider the themes of patronage, merit, charisma, coup d'etat, manipulation, fear, elation and inheritance. Each of these themes, as one might expect, examine the different approaches to leadership employed prior to and during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars from 1776 to 1814. As such, the reader is not only introduced to the theory of each style of leadership but also how each came to the fore during Napoleon's rise to power through to his defeat and banishment into exile. At the end of each chapter the reader is presented with a number of questions to reinforce learning and reflect on how the theme may relate to him or herself in their own roles as leaders. At the end of the book is a detailed bibliography, which usefully serves as a further reading section for both the fields of leadership and the Napoleonic Wars…"

I'll wait to see a few more opinions but on first sight, this looks a very interesting book.

Sounds very much like the same premise Col. WJ Wood used in his much earlier book, Leaders and Battles: the Art of Military Leadership. Wood also used the criteria of courage, will, intellect, presense, and energy, but did not restrict his examples to the French Revolutionary/Napoleonic period.

I agree that this new book sounds interesting. Off to Amazon I go…
